Glorious jargon...

Now whilst, as you know, I love architecture, I seem to be just as tickled by the jargon associated with it. I particularly love this description in the Listings of the Clock Tower in Hay-on-Wye (built in 1884) when we visited recently...

“High Victorian Gothic tall square tower with chamfered angles; rubble with some freestone dressings. Pyramidal slate roof in 2 stages with open bellcote and weathervane; pyramidal roof lucarnes to each face. Moulded eaves with machicolations. Round clock faces to each side set in pointed arched frames with linked hoodmoulds and stringcourse. Scalloped corbels to angles with 3 trefoils between; 2 arrowslits to each face. Heraldic band with set-offs below and diagonal buttresses with punched trefoil gablets. Double cusped arched openings to N and S sides with hood mouldings and nook shafts; blocked to S boarded double doors to N.”
Whilst most of the terms seem quite commonplace, I had not heard of ‘lucarnes’ (dormers), ‘machicolations’ (murder holes in castle battlements) and ‘gablets’ (small gables) before. Every day’s a schoolday...!

Cotswolds gorgeousness...

On an architectural jaunt round Chipping Campden, one end of The Cotswold Way, and one of a number of towns that became tremendously prosperous off the back of the wool this region’s known for. Much of the architecture was built by or for Sir Baptist Hicks, silk mercer to the court of James I and politician, and it was where that great influence on the development of the Arts and Crafts movement, C R Ashbee, moved the Guild and School of Handicraft he founded in 1888 to in 1902...

Tithe Barn Gorgeousness...!

More from my diversion to Hartpury and the magnificent structure this gorgeous heraldic beast stands guard over. This glorious tithe barn was originally built in C14th for St Peter’s Abbey, Gloucester and altered C18th and C19th. The gable end facing England is guarded by a Welsh dragon finial 1️⃣, 5️⃣, 8️⃣ & 9️⃣ and the end facing Wales (which I was sadly unable to get to) by a lion. The C19th alterations include retiling the roof in red tiles with blue diamonds and bands on the South side 2️⃣ & 3️⃣. As one of the largest tithe barns in the country, surrounded by the parched fields of 2026, one wonders whether the farmers of previous centuries would have found it as difficult to fill...!

The pride of Cheltenham...

Maybe I should have posted this when the footy was on(!), but here’s just a little selection of lions, used architecturally as symbols of royal authority, national pride, and strength, all in my old home town of Cheltenham - some proud 4️⃣ & 7️⃣, some imperious 1️⃣, some sly 3️⃣, some fearsome 2️⃣, some seemingly quite frightened 5️⃣(!) and some really quite jolly 🔟....! Favourites, anyone...?

Bee Des Res...!

I came across this glorious structure thanks to a very long diversion avoiding the new roadworks where the A40 crosses the Severn on our way from the Wye to The Cotswolds. Hartpury has a number of fine historical buildings and this is the Bee Shelter in the grounds of St Mary’s Church. It was originally built as a place to house bee skeps in the mid-C19th by beekeeping stonemason Paul Tuffley in his ornamental garden in Nailsworth. That house eventually became the police station and when that was closed in the 1960s, to prevent the bee shelter’s destruction, it was dismantled by the Gloucestershire Beekeeping Association and reassembled at the Hartpury Agricultural College. By the end of the century it had begun to deteriorate and so it was restored and reassembled, thanks to English Heritage and Hartpury Historic Land & Buildings Trust, at St Mary’s, just down the road from the college.
It has spaces for 28 skeps which, at somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 bees per skep in season, works out at a LOT of bees! Each skep is separated from its neighbour by a thin limestone ashlar screen, frilled almost like an octopus’ te****le, some concave, some convex, and the shelter protects the skeps from getting wet. Really quite marvellous...and well worth the diversion!

Here are a few shots from a little noodle round St Mary’s Redcliffe in Bristol (which, as a 700-year old great chunk of cool, cool stone, is a pretty good place to be in the heat!). The oldest parts date back to 1294 in Early English Gothic style, with later additions in the C14th, C15th in Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular Gothic styles and restored by the Victorians in the C19th. I absolutely love the pinnacles with their ballflower decoration and most characterfully faced headstops 2️⃣ & 6️⃣, and the fabulous flying buttresses 1️⃣ & 9️⃣...

Grime and Punishment...!

This glorious building is the former Central Police Station in Bridewell in Bristol. Originally built in 1928 in limestone ashlar in a stripped back, Mannerist version of a symmetrical neoclassical style 1️⃣ & 2️⃣, it features a sturdy Gibbs blocked door-surround beneath five huge stepped keystones beneath a pediment 2️⃣, topped off with a relief of a scrolled banner with fasces (classical badge of judicial and penal authority) and the coat of arms of Bristol 4️⃣, 7️⃣ & 8️⃣. The venue in more modern times has been used as an artspace, and the birds 5️⃣, 6️⃣ & 🔟, flowers 9️⃣ and ‘LOVE’ 3️⃣ and ‘MORE LOVE’ 9️⃣ are an interesting eco take on graffiti where a jet washer and stencils were used to selectively remove areas of historical pollution and dirt...
