Rising Energy Prices, Is This Really Good News?

Today's announcement from Ofgem, giving notice of a 4% increase on household energy bills from 1st October, has generally been badly received.

However, for the heat pump industry, it actually gives a glimmer of hope.

The Spark Gap, which measures the cost between a kWh of electricity against gas, with the new price cap, is closing.

A kWh of heat on gas, working on a 90% efficient gas boiler, now costs 8.86p.
Based on an cost of 26.32p/kWh for electric, this means the Spark Gap for a heat pump is at 3:1.
As most, well installed, modern heat pumps have seasonal performances (ScoP's) well above 3:1, swapping to a heat pump is now a clear winner.
Add this to the BUS grant of up to £9000 and the complete installation being 0% VAT rated, there has never been a better time to get a heat pump.
