Did you know Singapore is starting an initiative to pay people to read? A five year programme to fight brain rot and increase the country's reading culture! The idea is to encourage everyone to read for just 15 minutes a day because that is all it takes to create a habit!

They found that lots of people are reading but it's mostly short form.

While short-form content helps us stay informed, long-form reading strengthens attention, critical thinking, and imagination, and ultimately, they want to see a nation of readers who are curious, thoughtful, discerning and equipped to navigate an increasingly complex world!

In an ever changing and developing world the humble book is as important as ever ❤️

Did you know that by the time children reach 8 years of age, only a third of them say that they enjoy reading and only 1 in 5 say they read regularly.

So what happens as children get older? Why do they turn away from books? and what can we do to help?

There are so many reasons but taking the pressure off definitely helps.

When children are forced to read at school, or to record their reading at home in a record book, it becomes an academic chore. Forcing a child to read a book they have no interest in can have a very negative impact too. Children need choice. To be allowed to read whatever they want - that includes comics, graphic novels, manga, joke books and non-fiction books. Even watching TV and films with subtitles counts!

Are screens the problem? It definitely has played a part but not entirely. Social media has actually had a hugely positive impact on many teen's reading. The YA booktok sphere is huge and incredibly influential!

Unfortunately reading levels have been falling for the last two decades, well before the current social media obsession began.

It is definitely worth looking at our own reading habits too. If we don't read for pleasure and have a home full of books (whether you've bought them or they're from the library) then we can't expect our child to be a reader either. We are always their biggest influence. I know, scary right? 🙈

Are you a reader? What do you model to your child?

It's not a surprise to a lot of you that I love reading YA and middle grade fiction! I read plenty of other books too, all different genres but there is something so comforting and reliable about children's and Young adult books!

It's a shame that so many adults are put off reading them simply because they are for kids when they could enjoy them just as much as they would a new Disney film with a U or PG rating. Just because middle grade fiction is aimed at age 8 - 12 it doesn't mean anyone older can't enjoy it too!!

Just because it's a kids book doesn't mean it won't contain interesting funny or flawed characters, brilliant world building and contain big, serious or complex topics! Not to mention storylines that will keep you hooked. No nine-year-old is going to indulge the author wandering off-topic, or getting lost in 50 pages of unnecessary prose. Children’s authors have to work really hard on their storytelling. Every chapter and every scene has to work hard to keep readers reading. This also makes them perfect to get you back into reading after a break, or out of a reading slump.

This was me. Reading children's books totally made me fall in love with reading again ❤️

I could go on and on and I'm sure I will again at some point but for now I will leave it there and just share this brilliant quote from Katherine Russell....

"Children’s literature is not ‘lesser than’ adult literature, it’s distilled, like literary vodka"

Ps. This is our book for September in Kerry's Book Club and I can't wait to get stuck in!!

I already miss this view! 🌊

With that in mind I thought I'd show you some of our all time favourite sea themed books 🌊

From Peep Inside the Sea that Parker LOVED age 4 to Peril on the Atlantic, the first in a series of mysteries at sea that has been thoroughly enjoyed across the last couple of years 🌊

We've enjoyed all these books over the years so can personally recommend them ❤️
