๐ VW Golf 1.6 FSI โ Starts, Runs, Then Cuts Out
This Golf came to us with an intermittent running/no-start problem. The engine would start and run for a while, then cut out.
A diagnostic scan with VCDS revealed:
๐ด P0091 โ Fuel Metering Valve (N290) โ Short to Ground
The interesting part was that the vehicle had already had a new high-pressure fuel pump and low pressure pump at considerable expense to the customer but the problem remained.
Rather than simply replacing more parts, we monitored the fuel pressure while the engine was running.
At around 2,000 RPM, VCDS showed:
โก๏ธ Fuel pressure specified: 5.79 bar
โก๏ธ Fuel pressure actual: 1.17 bar
So we had a substantial pressure shortfall.
That meant we needed to look further into the fuel pressure regulation/control system, rather than assuming the pumps were the problem.
Further testing identified a faulty fuel pump regulator.

๐ง Once the faulty regulator was replaced, the fuel pressure problem was resolved and the engine was able to continue running correctly.
What this shows
A fault code doesnโt always mean โreplace the component named in the code.โ
In this case, P0091 led us into the fuel metering/pressure control system, but it took live data, pressure comparison and systematic testing to identify the actual cause.
This is why proper automotive diagnostics is about testing and proving the fault, not just changing parts until the problem disappears.
