With the shift of the season and the approach of traditional harvest celebrations, this design is based on what I’d like to gather and bring with me from the summer. This is the feeling of the sea breeze; a sense of space and fresh perspective. I asked Deborah the flower farmer to cut whichever flowers would be in peak condition for the delivery, so the beautiful colour palette was dictated by her field’s growing rhythm. I tied the stems low down, so gravity brings the heads out from the centre, leaving space between them. The stems above the twine, which would usually be covered with foliage or interrupted by other flower heads are relatively clear, so you can trace the path from bottom to top, taking in a fuller view of each bloom in its entirety.

Resilience & Røry

For this design I asked Deborah the flower farmer to cut the most resilient ingredients from her field. The crop is keeping her on her toes with the sunshine spurring the flowers through their cycles quicker than in previous years. These are her top picks for holding up in the heat: thistle, daisy, dill, achillea, echinacea, oregano and dahlia. And standing in the field I had to add some of that moody red orach, seed pods just developing, and dancing in the sun. I have been listening to 1 ½ albums by (Restoration & Bloodletting), which to me beautifully illustrate resilience. She sings, screams and speaks with honesty, vulnerability and pure anger about her experiences of addiction, depression and inter-generational trauma. It is raw and poetic and she expresses in a way I can recognise the feeling of fighting your way through your own mind to make it into the world outside.

I realised this year why I end up weeding so many sycamore seedlings out of my garden; their little helicopter seed pods develop in clumps, so one local tree can produce a LOT of seedlings!

How gorgeous are the colours on these tiny boomerangs though? These beauties are dangling in Arthur Newbery Park. Take a look upwards when you’re out and about.
