It’s going to get HOT over this next week folks….!! 🥵 🔥

Two things to remember:

1. This is at a global warming of 1.3’C above pre-industrial times, and current policies and actions could have us hitting 3.3’C - another two whole degrees hotter still!

2. We have everything we need to effectively slow and halt this temperature rise: the understanding of the science, we know which nature-based solutions we need to implement, and we have the technologies for the final ‘mop up’ of greenhouse gases.

We just need the political will.

Let’s do this!!!

☀️ 📈 In May, for the first time, solar supplied more of the US’s electricity than coal, or 12.8%, global energy thinktank Ember said. Coal supplied 12.2%, its fourth-lowest monthly share ever. Wind and solar combined have overtaken coal in the past, and wind power alone has outpaced coal during spring months when wind speeds pick up. The Guardian

🔋🇺🇸 The U.S. added 9.7 gigawatt-hours of new energy storage capacity in the first quarter of 2026. That was up 32% from the same period a year earlier. The growth forecast now exceeds 610 gigawatt-hours of energy storage installations by 2030. One notable reason is volatility in fuel markets tied to the U.S. and Israel’s war in Iran. The Cool Down

🌴 🪵 Amazon deforestation alerts fall to lowest 12-month level since 2014, and down 61% since May 2025. Satellite alerts suggest deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is continuing to fall, putting the country on pace for one of its lowest forest-clearing years in more than a decade. Mongabay | mongabay.com

🌱 🏝️The world’s coastal mangrove forests, which protect millions of people from storms - and soak up vast amounts of planet-warming gases - are staging an unexpected comeback, scientists find. Since 2010 the world has been gaining more mangroves than it has been losing. BBC News

☀️⚡️ African countries are increasingly looking to renewable energy to meet growing power demand. Increasingly, renewables are displacing fossil fuels. Of the 322 energy projects announced across the African continent last year, 253 were renewable energy projects, including 173 solar installations, according to research firm Electron Intelligence.

🧪 📉 A new peer-reviewed study found that levels of some of the most dangerous “forever chemicals” in Canadian seabird eggs have dropped dramatically over the past 55 years, a hopeful sign that environmental regulations are working. Researchers studying northern gannet eggs in the St. Lawrence Seaway found that levels of PFOS fell by 74%, while other harmful PFAS chemicals also saw major declines.

🇳🇿 🌊 Aotearoa New Zealand has announced the establishment of five new marine reserves along the Otago coast today, marking the country’s first new marine sanctuaries in over a decade. The newly designated network, encompassing 308 square-kilometres, increases mainland Aotearoa New Zealand’s total marine reserve coverage by nearly 50 percent.

🛌 🚆 The Netherlands and Italy will be connected by a new sleeper train later this year, it was announced this week, in a major boost for Europe’s night train network. The route is an extension of the Brussels-Milan service that it will launch in September, offering stops in Antwerp, Breda and Eindhoven.

A little better for our purses 👛 as well as the planet 🌍

No-one is ‘perfect’ not even me - I have a major brand face cream in a plastic bottle. I know right….? 😮 😱

But alongside the big things we all need to do in terms of pushing our governments and corporations to change the way our world operates, the little things do add up (remember: there’s 8 billion of us!)

So why not enjoy some extra face cream for free next time you get to the end of your bottle?

Climate Change means more heatwaves AND more hail and downpours.

Do you know why?

For every 1°C of warming, the atmosphere holds an extra 7% of water. a wetter atmosphere means more heavy downpours of rain.

Our world is already 1.3°C warmer, which means there is an extra 9.1% more moisture in our atmosphere.

At 1.5°C of warming our atmosphere will hold 10.5% more water. If we hit 3°C of warming our atmosphere will hold 21% more water, which means more (and heavier) rain.

Current policies & action have us on track for 2.1°C to 3.3°C of warming!

“Hail-producing thunderstorms have three ingredients: strong updrafts (warm, rising air that fuels the storm), an unstable atmosphere and abundant atmospheric moisture.” ref:

Every fraction of a degree will help.

🇺🇳 🌍 The UN General Assembly adopted the historic the International Court of Justice ruling on the climate crisis. The resolution (adopted with 141 votes in favour, eight against) calls on all UN Member States to take all possible steps to avoid causing significant damage to the climate and environment, including emissions produced within their borders, and to follow through on their existing climate pledges under the Paris Agreement.

🪨 📉 Storing carbon dioxide in rocks while producing hydrogen from them - and perhaps even geothermal power too - could be a double win on the climate front, and several groups are trying to make it happen. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have shown that this process works for one common rock type in lab studies. They now want to work with companies on field trials.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🦭 Seabed life triples after bottom trawling ban in Scotland protected area. Nearly a decade since Scotland established the South Arran Marine Protected Area and banned bottom trawling across much of it, life on the seafloor has thrived. Scientists surveying the area found three times more seabed organisms and twice as many species compared to nearby unprotected waters.

🇫🇷 🌳 In Sceaux, south of Paris, officials have created a sweeping Tree Charter aimed at preserving more than 65,000 trees across parks, schools and neighbourhoods. The city inventories every tree, plants drought-resistant species, compensates for construction damage and requires that two new trees be planted for every one removed.
