This (summer*) spring will be one of the hottest on record.

It will also be one of the coolest our children will know.

Pretty sobering thought right??

(* because although it feels like summer, we’re actually still in spring. But it will likely the same for this summer too.)

If you’re really struggling with the heat right now, remember that this heat is what 1.3°C of warming feels like. current policies & action have us on track for 2.1°C to 3.3°C of warming!! we all need to demand our MPs help us to limit how much the planet heats up.

I say this not to scare anyone, but because if we don’t want 3.3°C of warming (we don’t), for every one of us who is well, housed, safe with free time or money to do nice things, it’s time to engage.

Engaging in climate action can sound really scary, but it does not mean you have to protest or take direct action (you don’t) but you do have to actively play a part if you are resourced.

Here’s a few things you can do to get started.

💷 Move your money 💷

High street banks & pension funds pour trillions into the fossil fuel industry. Use or .green (their websites) to check out how your bank looks and get suggestions where to change too. The campaign has now ended but they have loads of resources still live such as templated emails you can send to your bank and / or pension providers, plus a table of pensions and their climate impact. And finally has a Climate Plan pension.

🥕 Eat more veg 🥦

25-30% of emissions come from food
50%+ food emissions come from animal products.
‘Crowd out’ the meat and dairy with increasingly more veg.
Remember - it’s not all or nothing; every little helps.

🤝 Join a climate group today 🌍

Again, it feels like a really scary thing to do, but start by simply following:

Or any other climate accounts you come across.

Who else has donned their visor? I LOVED my light blue one I had as a child. I wore it a LOT.

Luckily it’s still pretty cool at 6:30am so I’ve been able to go for my runs. But I have done more alternating of running with walking so as to not overheat.

I don’t know about you, but this super hot weather (34/35’C here in London yesterday) has been making me feel not great at times.

Doing all we can to keep our house cool and our paddling pool is a lifesaver, but we are not equipped to deal with this continuous heat. Our loft room got to 33’C at one point yesterday - despite all my attempts to keep the heat out! (I think it’s actually heat from the rest of the house rising up the stair well… any time the doors are left open or we turn the oven on…)

How are you all doing? How hot has it got where you are?

🚫 🌊 Dutch inventor Boyan Slat plans to stop 90% of floating sea plastic by 2040 – and for less than $1bn (£750m). His nonprofit organisation, The Ocean Cleanup, is already deploying technology designed to stop waste before it reaches the sea. According to Slat, targeting just 30 cities could prevent around a third of the plastic currently entering the oceans.

🦊 🇺🇸 The Santa Catalina Island fox almost disappeared forever. Now, its recovery is among the fastest of any endangered species. In 1999 the population crashed from around 1,300 animals to just 100, due to a virus. But with help from conservationists, the population is now off the endangered species list.

🏞️ 🧑‍⚖️ The entire catchment of the River Wye has been formally recognised as a living ecosystem with intrinsic rights in a charter, a UK first that campaigners hope will help save the highly polluted river. It includes the right to flow, to biodiversity, to be free from pollution, to be supported by a healthy catchment, to regenerate, and the right to be represented.

In my continuing quest to keep cool (34’C here today. 35’C tomorrow!) I have come up with a new way….!

I was hanging up our washing which included my baseball cap that I’d sweated into, when I thought: I bet that would be nice and cold on head, so on it went. And then I saw the shirt that I wore yesterday to protect me from the sun and put that on too! It was like wearing my own cooling jacket! It’s so warm already that it’s almost dried now…. 😥 but I may have to just keep running it under the tap and putting it back on.

Any more tips and tricks to keep cool?

Doing my best to have a (not too) hot girl summer in our loft bedroom this heatwave.

1. Hang our duvet over our railings to block the sum from even hitting half of our glass doors.

2. Once the outside temperature hits the same and the inside close the doors.

3. & 4. Put down our outside blinds that block 95% of the sun’s rays.

5. & 6. Close our inside thermal blinds

7. Turn on our fan / air purifier to move the air around the room.

8. I’ve managed to keep the room at 26’C so far.

9. & by sending your MP a postcard - 🔗 link in bio.

I think it got to 27’C yesterday which was hot but not too unbearable. I also leave our velux windows open a tiny amount to let any hot air out (they have external blinds too which keeps the glass from heating up.)

How to keep your house naturally cool (without AC):

1. Open all your windows first thing when it’s coolest outside (if you haven’t already had them open all night).

2. Close them back up again when the temperature outside starts feeling the same as inside. I find this is around 10am on the sunny side of my house, and 11am/midday on the shady side.

3. Also close all your curtains, blinds or shutters.

🛑 At this point we’re trying to stop any more hot air come into the house and stop the sun’s rays from heating our house directly through the windows.

4. Open everything back up once it starts to cool down again. I tend to find this is mid to late evening. If it’s safe to do so, leave your windows open all night to try to draw in as much cool air into your house, ready for the next day.

🌡️ Doing this (plus fans) we were able to keep our house at 30’C when outside reached 40’C in Summer 2022. And overnight we could get it down to 25’C so while it was hot and sticky, it was bearable.

5. Do everything we can to halt the climate crisis, including demanding a fair transition away from fossil fuels to renewables from the UK Government. With a final ‘NO’ to Rosebank oilfield. There is no place for fossil fuels if we want a liveable future. If we don’t, the world (and our homes) are only going to heat up even more during the summer.

wednesdays i share wise words. i have a ‘to do’ item that says ‘wise words wednesday post’. most weeks i have something to say, or wise words i want to share. but this week...?

nothing. i wanted to write about finding common ground, about coming together, and overcoming our differences, but i don’t know what to say...

i don’t know whether it’s because my head (& heart) are full and there’s no space to find some wisdow or write encouragement. or maybe it’s because i’m fighting a cold...?

maybe it’s the weather, perimenopause or too much scrolling or the parenting juggle? do you ever get the feeling that you’re a sponge that has absorbed the most it can?

that unless you wring yourself out, you simply can’t absorb anything more? can you relate? maybe that’s why i don’t have anything to say this week?

well it looks like my wise wednesday words have become waffling wednesday words... just a stream of consciousness thoughts spilling out...
