Top-stitching is one of those techniques that can be a bit intimidating for some people. You are expected to sew in a completely straight line, parallel to to edge, with even stitches... eek!

Obviously practice really helps, but the machine feet you choose can also make a huge difference! My favourite is the open-toed foot, and I can guarantee that I can get a perfect line of stitching at either 1/8" (3mm) or 3/8" (1cm) without having to measure, by using the edge of the foot as a guide.

There are plenty of other useful feet too: stitch-in-the-ditch, 1/4", blind-hemming... the list in long. If you want to read more, I have a tutorial on my website all about top-stitching.

Are you nervous about adding an inset zipper pocket to your project?
My latest pattern, the Everyday Travel Pouch, comes with an extra masterclass which shows you how to add a pocket using a facing.

This method has the following benefits:
• You can make sure you are happy with your rectangle before you add the zip
• You can use the same fabric or a contrast, depending on the look you want
• You can use a thinner fabric for the pocket bag, to prevent bulk
• The edges of the zipper are fully enclosed, which looks really professional

My latest video shows you in detail how to sew this kind of zipper pocket. In fact, I show it twice! The first pocket is the usual horizontal style, and the second is vertical. The timestamps are listed on the video so you can go straight to where you need.
