June is Men's Mental Health month!

I spent a good majority of my undergraduate degree researching perceptions of male victims of domestic violence and the stigma behind masculinity and male expressions of mental health.

In my research, I uncovered a disgusting reality; men are often treated as third rate citizens when it comes to their mental health. Measures for Domestic Violence are targeted to specifically assist women and children, but men are still victims of domestic violence every single day.

In Scotland, a helpline that was dedicated to helping male victims of DV was audited by the Scottish government and nearly shut down because the auditor stated that men could not be victims of domestic violence because men are incapable of being placed under coercive control. This, as we all know, is entirely untrue. Along with this it is estimated that 155,000 males aged 16-74 experienced sexual assault in 2000 alone. Modern day statistics state that 1 in 6 men have experienced SA in their lifetime. Unfortunately, because of the stigma for men, the figures are more than likely higher than presently stated.

Please don't forget that men are worthy and men are deserving of support. We should all recognize the importance of giving men the time and support they deserve.
