Coneflowers (echinacea) and olive leaves. I love making coneflowers at this time of year, in their various colours, length of petals and size of cone. I bought a deep pink one for my garden last week which smells strongly of honey-the bees are loving it🐝 and it’ll be great to have a real one on site to copy.

Staining Echinacea petals with tea.☕️This cup of tea won’t go to waste! I’ll use it to colour at least a couple of folds of crepe paper, to make petals and flower centres. 🎁

I love dying paper at the turn of the season. It’s a bit like strolling through Marks & Spencer when they have clothes in colours for the coming season. My eye welcomes the change in response to the daylight getting weaker or stronger and realising that the “old stuff” doesn’t seem to grab me any more. It works the same with flowers.🌹

Cosmos and gypsophila. I made a lot of the pale pink cosmos earlier in the summer but they’re looking a bit “washed out” now the sun is less strong, so I’ve added some flowers in a stronger pink. In a month from now I’ll probably replace most of the pale pinks with chocolate cosmos...a reddy-brown flower to keep it seasonal. If I want to keep it going up to Christmas, I’ll take out the gyp and maybe add something red like anemones. Just to show how you can keep one vase of paper flowers going, from May to December! #

Dahlia class coming soon!
These are one of my favourite flowers to make, and they look great in a vase. I’m making six more of the one at top right, for my hall this autumn. I recently made Ruscus-a dark green, straight foliage, which goes beautifully with these flowers.

An evening’s work.
I spent a (long!) evening cutting out petals to make several of these dahlias.
The following evening I painted the petals, and this evening I’ll begin assembling some flowers. I much prefer to make flowers in batches, rather than making one flower at a time as I seem to work faster that way. After four or five evenings, I’ll have made seven of these colourful flowers to brighten those late summer days.

It was ninety degrees in my studio yesterday morning. I can’t fully open the windows because my paper petals blow around everywhere. It seems so obvious now, but it’s only just occurred to me to keep all the blinds closed day and night in this very hot weather...so, so, much cooler. It’s often just a little thing that makes the biggest difference!

Colour!
I’m making lots of these poppies for a friend and they’re in such joyful colours. Apart from these, there are two shades of pink and two shades of yellow. I get such satisfaction from working with whatever colour palette appeals to me at any given time, so for right now, this is it!

Hypericum berries made from air-drying clay.
I really enjoyed making these berries, which come in several different colours. One type has berries with a pink blush which makes them look like miniature apples.
