Formula Sound Ltd Design and manufacture of professional audio equipment. [email protected]

Based in London and Oldham we continue designing and building our products here in the UK to the highest standards we can achieve. We design our products for high quality audio, we continue to use analogue signal processing because the audio quality is better, and while we use some control circuits that are digital the signal chain always remains analogue. Our PCB designs continue to be based on t

hrough hole assembly and the high reliability this brings, and we continue to use high quality components such as gold plated phono's, Neutrik XLR's and ALP's faders. We always use a linear power supply and toroidal transformers for minimum power supply noise and maximum reliability. But do not take our word for it, listen to a piece of Formula Sound equipment because hearing is believing. The major London musicals and many major clubs throughout the UK and all over the world use Formula Sound equipment because they believe in the sound quality.

The Formula Sound NN106 is the successor to our PM100 mixer, while the NN106 is not modular it does take forward the universal input capability of the PM100.
The NN106 has 4 selectable different inputs on each channel, channels 1&2 have Mic/Line/Balanced line/USB and channels 3 – 6 have MIC/Line/Phono/USB (TRAKTOR compatible).
The channel MIC inputs may be assigned to a separate MIC buss, the channel MIC buss may be assigned into the booth or out of the booth.
The NN106 includes an FX loop which incorporates a compressor and variable frequency high/low pass filters (similar to FF2.2/FF4.2/FF6.2) onboard feeding a 3 pole jack send/return that automatically loops back when no jack is inserted. Each channel has an FX loop select switch, any channel may select the FX loop but only one channel at a time can use it.
Each channel also has an AUX send, 3 band full kill EQ, gain adjustment, linear channel fader and X fade select switches.
The PHONO inputs are two stage circuits that track the theoretical RIAA phono curve to within 0.5dB from 20Hz to 20Khz. Additionally the phono input capacitance may be set to one of four settings to best match your cartridge. The NN106 has exceptional vinyl performance.
There is also a console MIC with voiceover facility for automatically ducking the music when the mic is spoken into, the amount of ducking is settable for best results.
The MIC/Line/Balanced line/Phono inputs are all individual to each channel. The USB input is a single USB input that can be assigned to any channel (or multiple channels), the single USB input carries 2 stereo signals (USB1 & USB2) and each channels USB setting may be assigned to either USB1 or USB2 (with a recessed switch).
So each of the 6 channels have a choice of 3 analogue inputs and one of two USB signals from the USB input.
The USB input is a high performance circuit, there are better stand alone USB boxes but this is one of the best incorporated into a mixer.

We have had some feedback regarding the FF2.2, all of the feedback regarding use with vinyl acknowledges the PHONO quality the FF2.2 provides. But there has been some uncertainty on the FX loop switch so to clarify the operation: The FF2.2 has an FX switch on both channel 1 and channel 2, the FX switch allocates the FX jack socket to the channel it is selected on. It is not intended that both channels FX switches be selected at the same time as this will merge the sends from CH1 & CH2 and return the same return to both. It's intention is to provide an insert point on the channel selected and have a one stereo jack connection for 1 FX unit that is acessible to both channels but for use on one selected channel at a time. The FX switch should be operated fader down because its an analogue audio mixer and the switch breaks the channel audio to send on one side and return on the other. The return is handled by a FET switch so we put a small delay on the operation of the FET switch to avoid any switch click but the delay is a delay hence the fader down recommendation. So for vinyl we have not found anyone with a FF2.2 that thinks there is a better 2 channel out there, the FX loop switches are to effectively assign a single insert to either CH1 or CH2 - hope this helps!

INTRODUCING OUR NEW FORMULA SOUND MIXER - THE NN106

We at Formula Sound have had a number of requests to update or do a new version of the PM100. We eventually decided to do a new mixer drawing on the PM100 and incorporate a few things from our other mixers.

While a few people like the modular construction of the PM100, most liked the flexibility of the choice of inputs, so while we do not rule out doing another modular mixer in the future we decided it would be a fixed format mixer with an even greater choice of inputs.

We designated the new mixer NN106 as: CH1 & 2 will select between Mic/Line/Balanced line and USB: CH 3- 6 has a choice of MIC/LINE/PHON/USB. Additionally we decided to use the improved PHONO circuit that we developed for the FF2.2

When we developed the FF6000, we added a console MIC, so effectively it was a 7 channel mixer. We continued this with the FF6.2 and so decided it should also be in the NN106 as a number of customers of PM100 chose more than 6 channels. I would add at this point that we intend to do a NN108 (8 channel) and NN104 (4 channel).

We have found 2 AUX sends are of limited use on a 6 channel and much more so on a 4 channel, and given we intend to do a NN104 4 channel we decided 1 AUX and an FX loop (drawing on FF6000/FF2.2) would be more useful. Once we decided to include an FX loop we decided we could include in the FX loop a variable frequency HP & LP filter of the type in each channel on the FF6.2. Also partly because of the extra MIC inputs we felt a compressor in the FX loop would also be useful.

So on the NN106, each channel has an FX send to a strip in the output with HP/LP filters and compressor plus wet/dry control - the strip also goes to a switchable jack so an external FX unit can be plugged in but with no jack it returns to the channel sent. It also has a voiceover facility same as the current PM100 and fader curve control. Headphones is as the PM100 but with both usual 1/4 jack and additional 3.5mm jack.
Metering is 3 stereo columns of 12 LED's for Master, Booth and CUE.

Full specification sheet will be released end June/early July.

We have developed a new remote power supply option for the FF6.2/FF4.2/FF2.2. It will tolerate more variation in mains power supply such as when supplied from a generator at a festival for example.
We are calling it the festival version remote power supply and it will tolerate over 30% drop in mains supply voltage giving you peace of mind.

The FF2.2 is available from monday 22nd July 2019. Its performance is exceptional but with vinyl it is absolutely superb.

It has a two stage phono input amplifier that tracks the RIAA curve for vinyl recordings extremely closely, a switch allows you to select one of four capacitances to best match your turntable cartridge which together means sound reproduction that is hard to beat.

Additionally there is a switchable rumble filter and a switchable vinyl noise cancelling circuit. Low frequency noise picked up on the turntable arm appears as a difference signal on left and right, summing the low frequencies to mono cancels this noise. The FF2.2 has a EQ bass frequency of 120Hz, so summing this to mono achieves the noise cancelling, a mono low frequency has little effect on the sound, that sub bass is mono demonstrates this. Because the noise cancelling and rumble filter are switchable you can decide if using them improves the sound and if not then leave them switched out.
