Back this evening with the incredible Joan Armatrading and her fourth studio album Show Some Emotion, released in 1977 on A&M Records.
•••
Produced by the legendary Glyn Johns (who also worked with The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, and The Who), the album showcased Joan’s unique blend of folk, rock, and soul with deeply personal and poetic lyrics. Her ability to shift from tender vulnerability to bold confidence makes this one of her standout records.
•••
Highlights include the heartfelt title track Show Some Emotion, the beautifully flowing Willow, and the grooving Warm Love. The album reached No. 6 in the UK and cracked the Billboard 200 in the U.S., further establishing Joan as one of the most original singer-songwriters of the era.
•••
Armatrading also broke barriers at the time, becoming one of the first Black British women to achieve major success in the worlds of folk and rock - paving the way for countless others while staying true to her own uncompromising style.
•••
Writing in 1977, Rolling Stone praised her gift for “emotional honesty delivered without artifice,” noting how the songs balance intimacy with real power.
•••
Her voice carries such strength and tenderness at the same time – it feels like she’s singing directly to you. A timeless album that rewards every listen.

This evening’s listening is in tribute to the brilliant Rick Davies, co-founder, keyboardist, and vocalist of Supertramp, who sadly passed away this week at the age of 81 after a long battle with multiple myeloma. A true architect of the band’s sound, Rick’s soulful playing and deep baritone were at the very heart of their most iconic music.
•••
Spinning tonight: Even in the Quietest Moments… – the band’s fifth studio album, released in April 1977. Sitting between Crisis? What Crisis? and the legendary Breakfast in America, this record shows Supertramp at one of their most creative peaks.
•••
It features the timeless hit “Give a Little Bit”, alongside beautifully arranged tracks like “Babaji” and the haunting title piece “Even in the Quietest Moments”. Recorded high up in the Colorado Rockies, the album blends reflective, heartfelt songwriting with that unmistakable Supertramp sound – smooth, melodic, and always tinged with a touch of melancholy.
•••
Rick’s subtle yet powerful keyboards shine throughout, giving the record its warmth and depth. Tonight it feels only right to revisit this classic and celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind. His music will live on in every groove.

This evening’s post is in memory of the late Mac Miller. An artist I grew up listening to, watching him go from a kid with a nice flow to a mean musician. We sadly lost him on this day in 2018. His music continues to resonate deeply, and tonight I’m spinning his incredible 2018 release Swimming.
•••
Released on August 3, 2018, Swimming was Mac’s fifth studio album and has since become one of his most celebrated works. It captures his journey of self-reflection, healing, and resilience - balancing smooth jazz-tinged beats, soulful production, and deeply personal lyrics. Tracks like Self Care, 2009, and Come Back to Earth show both vulnerability and strength, painting a portrait of an artist working through life’s struggles while still searching for peace.
•••
The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, and since its release, it has only grown in stature, often seen as a poignant part of Mac’s lasting legacy. Listening today, it feels like both a celebration of his artistry and a reminder of how much he gave to the world in his short time here.
•••
Rest easy, Mac. Your music lives on. 💙

Back this evening with something a little more modern for once - the brilliant Structuralism from London-based pianist, producer, and composer Alfa Mist, released in 2019.
•••
Blending jazz, hip-hop, soul, and a touch of classical influence, Structuralism shows Alfa Mist’s gift for crafting deep, introspective grooves that feel both contemporary and timeless. His work often reflects on identity, heritage, and personal growth, and this album is no exception - rich with atmosphere and conversation-like interplay between instruments.
•••
The record features contributions from a talented cast of musicians, with lush horn arrangements, hypnotic basslines, and Alfa’s own subtle but commanding presence on the keys. Tracks like Retainer and Falling highlight his ability to balance head-nodding beats with moments of raw, emotional beauty.
•••
A modern jazz essential that bridges genres and generations - and one that rewards both close listening and relaxed late-night spins.

Tonight’s spin is a wild trip into the Mothership with Parliament’s Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome, released in 1977 on Casablanca Records.
•••
This is George Clinton and the P-Funk collective at their most playful and political, blending cosmic funk grooves with social commentary. The album’s central theme is the struggle between real funk (Funkentelechy) and the artificial “placebo” music pushed by the mainstream - a warning to keep your ears open and your funk authentic.
•••
It features one of Parliament’s all-time anthems, Flash Light, driven by Bernie Worrell’s pioneering use of the Minimoog bass. That track alone became a blueprint for funk and later hip-hop, sampled endlessly by artists from Dr. Dre to Snoop Dogg.
•••
Clinton’s universe of Starchild, Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk, and the battle for funk supremacy all come together here - equal parts comic book mythology, heavy grooves, and sly cultural critique.
•••
A true cornerstone of P-Funk’s legacy - if you’re going to dive into their world, this is one of the essential stops on the journey.

This evening’s spin is a game-changer - Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet, released in 1990 on Def Jam/Columbia.
•••
Widely considered one of the most important hip-hop albums of all time, it sees Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, and the Bomb Squad at their peak, delivering politically charged, socially conscious rhymes over dense, sample-heavy production.
•••
It gave us classics like Fight the Power, Welcome to the Terrordome, and 911 Is a Joke. Fight the Power was originally commissioned by Spike Lee for his film Do the Right Thing (1989), and it became both a rallying cry in the streets and the centrepiece of this landmark album.
•••
The record hit #10 on the Billboard 200 and was later added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
•••
An essential listen — powerful, radical, and still as relevant today as it was in 1990.

Back tonight with one of the greatest soul records ever laid to wax! We sold a copy in the shop today and it reminded me to dig this out when I got back home! Otis Blue - Otis Redding Sings Soul, released in 1965.
•••
Cut over an astonishing 24-hour session at Stax Records in Memphis, Otis poured every ounce of passion into this set, backed by the Stax house band Booker T. & the MG’s, Isaac Hayes on piano, and the Memphis Horns. The result is raw, urgent, and timeless.
•••
The album blends Otis’s own material - like “Respect” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” - with stunning reimaginings of songs by The Rolling Stones and, most memorably, Sam Cooke, who had passed away just months before. His aching rendition of “A Change Is Gonna Come” still gives chills nearly 60 years later.
•••
Otis Blue didn’t just establish Redding as a star; it cemented him as the voice of Southern soul. A powerhouse record that feels every bit as alive and essential today.
