Well, I've learned something this week.

Apparently, the secret to running a successful Artisan Market is not years of experience, careful trader selection, balancing categories, managing waiting lists, attracting visitors, dealing with weather, complaints, cancellations and the occasional gazebo trying to achieve low earth orbit.

No.

The secret, it turns out, is to simply say yes to everyone.

What a fool I've been.

You see, all these years I've been under the impression that having too many traders selling exactly the same thing was a bad idea.

Silly me.

Clearly visitors dream of arriving at a market and saying:

"Ooh look Margaret, 37 jewellery stalls. Just what we came for."

"Shall we look at the next one?"

"No need. It's exactly the same as the last 36."

Then after three hours of looking at silver-plated dragonflies, moon pendants and earrings made from bits of old teaspoons, they can head home having experienced the full diversity of artisan retail.

Meanwhile the candle makers are wondering why there's another candle stall.

The bakers are wondering why there's another baker.

The wax melt sellers are wondering why there's another wax melt seller.

And the poor bloke selling handcrafted wooden badgers is sat there wondering why nobody can find him behind the wall of jewellery displays.

But apparently I'm doing it wrong.

Apparently if a space becomes available, I should immediately abandon all common sense and fill it with whatever category happens to be asking.

Never mind the traders already booked.

Never mind the market balance.

Never mind the customer experience.

Just get the pitch fee in and worry about the consequences later.

Now here's the awkward bit.

I actually quite like the traders who already support our events.

I know. Radical thinking.

So when I tell someone I don't have room for more jewellery, it's not because I dislike jewellery.

It's because I already have jewellery.

Quite a lot of jewellery.

In fact, I have so much jewellery that if I add any more, White Rose will probably start appearing on Google Maps as a branch of H. Samuel.

So yes, I occasionally say no.

Not because I enjoy it.

Not because I'm trying to be difficult.

But because if every spare space was filled with the same thing, you'd all be moaning at me six months later asking why the market has become rubbish.

Funny old world.

Anyway, if anyone needs me, I'll be busy making the shocking and controversial decision to have different things at an Artisan Market.

I know.

Absolute madness.

12/08/2026

Well, I don't know what all the fuss was about.

For weeks people had been talking about it.

The experts were on television explaining it.

The newspapers were full of stories about it.

Facebook was full of people sharing diagrams, timings and advice from people who, until about three days ago, couldn't find Bradford on a map but had somehow become leading authorities on the subject.

"Don't miss it."

"It's a rare event."

"You need to experience it."

"It's something you'll remember for years."

So this evening I thought I'd see what all the excitement was about.

Made myself a brew, found a comfortable seat in the garden and prepared to witness this remarkable event everyone had been banging on about.

At first I wasn't convinced.

It seemed a lot of fuss over not very much.

But then the more I looked, the more I began to appreciate it.

The shape was magnificent.

The colour was spot on.

It looked absolutely perfect.

People were appearing outside all over the place.

Neighbours were stood in their gardens staring into the distance.

One bloke had special glasses.

Another had a telescope.

Somebody down the road was apparently taking photographs.

Imagine explaining that to your grandkids.

"Grandad, where were you when it happened?"

"Sat in a camping chair taking blurry photos and annoying your grandma."

As I sat there taking it all in, I started to understand why people were so excited.

It really was something special.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Perfectly formed.

The sort of thing that makes you stop for a few minutes and appreciate the finer things in life.

Even Margaret from number 42 stopped talking about whose bin was six inches over the property line.

That alone should have made national news.

I must have spent the best part of half an hour admiring it.

Just sitting there quietly with my brew, appreciating the moment.

Then Susan walked out into the garden.

She looked at me.

She looked at what I was staring at.

Then she looked back at me with that expression that suggests she's questioning every decision she's made since we first met.

"Richard..."

"What?"

"That's not it."

"What isn't?"

"That."

"What do you mean that's not it?"

"The thing everybody's talking about."

I looked again.

She looked again.

Turns out I'd spent thirty minutes admiring a bacon buttie sat on a paper plate next to my mug.

To be fair, it was a cracking bacon buttie.

Perfect bread.

Perfect bacon.

Just enough brown sauce.

No fancy nonsense.

No avocado.

No rocket.

No artisan hand-crafted bacon lovingly massaged by a bloke called Tarquin.

Just a proper Yorkshire bacon buttie.

And unlike the thing everyone else was stood staring at, it actually improved my evening.

By 'eck...

That were a good brew.

🏆 WE’RE FINALISTS! 🏆

We’re absolutely delighted to announce that RSH Artisan Markets has been named as one of the FINAL THREE for the Leisure & Tourism Award at the Skipton Business Awards 2026! 🎉

And this one really does mean a lot to us.

Skipton is where RSH started. It’s our home market, and it’s a town we’re incredibly proud to be part of. ❤️

We’ve been bringing our Artisan Market to Skipton for years now, and the fact it continues to attract traders and visitors month after month says everything about what a fantastic place Skipton is.

People don’t just come for the market.

They come for Skipton.

They visit the independent shops, cafés and pubs, wander along the canal, visit the castle, explore the High Street and make a proper day of it.

That’s why Skipton has always been such a brilliant home for our market.

Over the years we’ve welcomed hundreds of independent traders and thousands upon thousands of visitors, and we’re incredibly proud that the market has become part of the town’s regular calendar.

Of course, there are three finalists in our category and, come awards night, one of us will walk away with the trophy.

But in our eyes, there’s already one clear winner…

SKIPTON ITSELF. ❤️

Because the fact that businesses, markets, attractions and events in this town are being recognised for bringing people into the area shows just how much Skipton has to offer.

We might compete for an award for one evening, but the rest of the year we’re all part of the same thing — giving people another reason to visit Skipton, stay a little longer, spend with local businesses and discover what a cracking Yorkshire town this really is.

So whichever of the three finalists hears their name called on the night, Skipton wins.

We’re just incredibly proud that RSH Artisan Markets gets to play a small part in that.

From those early Skipton markets to where RSH is today, it’s been quite a journey.

But Skipton will always be home. ❤️

Thank you to our traders, visitors, local businesses and everyone who has supported us over the years.

RSH Artisan Markets
Proud to be part of Skipton. 🏆

🚨⚠️ SCAM WARNING – PLEASE BE AWARE! ⚠️🚨

Well… it looks like the scammers have started already! 🙄

We have been made aware that emails are being sent to traders claiming to be from or on behalf of R.S.H Artisan Markets, asking for BANK TRANSFERS to pay for market bookings.

❌ PLEASE DO NOT PAY THEM.

R.S.H Artisan Markets DOES NOT work like this.

We will never randomly contact you asking you to make a bank transfer to secure a stall, especially if you haven't received the usual booking information from us.

If you receive ANY email, message or payment request that claims to be from R.S.H Artisan Markets and you're not 100% sure it's genuine, DO NOT PAY IT.

📩 Get in touch with us directly using the contact details you already know, and we will happily confirm whether the email or payment request genuinely came from us.

Please don't feel awkward about checking with us — we would much rather you ask than lose money to a scammer.

⚠️ Check the email address carefully
⚠️ Don't click suspicious payment links
⚠️ Don't send money because somebody says a pitch is about to be lost
⚠️ If something doesn't look or feel right, CHECK WITH US FIRST

Unfortunately, as events get bigger and information gets shared around social media, scammers see an opportunity to target traders.

Please be aware, folks.

And if you're part of the trader community, please SHARE THIS POST so we can get the warning out there before anybody gets caught out.

If in doubt — DON'T PAY. CONTACT R.S.H FIRST.

Stay safe everyone. ❤️

❤️ THANK YOU, SETTLE – ANOTHER CRACKING DAY! ❤️

Well, that’s another Settle Artisan Market done and dusted, and what a lovely day it turned out to be! 🙌

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who came along today and supported us and our fantastic bunch of independent traders.

Whether you came down specifically to visit the market, stumbled across us while having a day out in Settle, stopped for a chat, treated yourself to something nice, bought a gift, grabbed something tasty or simply had a wander around the stalls – thank you! ❤️

It really does make a difference.

We had a good steady flow of people throughout the day, plenty of familiar faces and lots of new ones too, and there was just a really nice atmosphere around the Market Place.

And somehow… we managed to dodge the rain! 🌦️😂

Well, mostly.

We had a few spits here and there, just enough for everyone to look suspiciously at the sky and wonder whether it was time to start covering everything up… and then it disappeared again!

For Yorkshire, we'll take that as a weather win. 😂

After some of the weather we've had to contend with at markets over the years, a few spits of rain is practically tropical! ☀️🤣

A huge thank you also has to go to our traders.

Markets don't just magically appear in the morning. There's the early alarm, loading the vehicle, travelling, unloading, putting gazebos up, getting tables straight, arranging stock and trying to remember where you put the one thing you definitely knew you'd packed!

Then at the end of the day, they get to do it all again… only backwards. 😂

So thank you to every trader who joined us today and brought such a fantastic selection of products to Settle.

We really do appreciate you.

One of the things we've always wanted with R.S.H is for our markets to feel like more than just a collection of stalls.

We want them to have that friendly, family market feel where traders know each other, customers recognise faces from month to month, people stop for a natter and everyone feels welcome.

And today was another one of those days where it felt exactly like that. ❤️

Of course, we also want to say a big thank you to the local businesses, shops, cafés and pubs around Settle.

One of the great things about holding the market right in the heart of town is that hopefully people don't just visit us – they have a wander around Settle, grab a coffee, have some lunch, visit the shops and make a proper day of it.

That's what it's all about.

Markets, local businesses and the community supporting each other.

So if you visited today, bought something from one of our traders or spent money elsewhere in Settle, you've helped support a small or independent business – and that genuinely matters. ❤️

We know there are plenty of places you could choose to spend your Sunday, so the fact that so many of you choose to come and spend part of it with us is something we never take for granted.

So from all of us at R.S.H Artisan Markets…

THANK YOU, SETTLE! ❤️

Thank you for coming.

Thank you for shopping local.

Thank you for supporting our traders.

Thank you for supporting the town.

And thank you for helping us have another cracking day – with only a few spits of rain thrown in just to remind us that we're still in Yorkshire! 😂🌦️

We'll see you all again soon!

R.S.H Artisan Markets ❤️

Supporting local. Supporting small. Bringing traders, customers and communities together.
