Next week the global floriculture industry comes to Nairobi.
We have been looking forward to this one. Twenty years in business, one year as a certified B Corp and a team and grower network that we are genuinely proud of, there is a lot to talk about.
If you are attending IFTEX next week, we hope to see you there. More details tomorrow.
Have a great weekend.

As we head into what is going to be a significant week for us, it feels like the right moment to look back at what the 20th year actually looked like.
104.1 million stems exported. Up from 87.4 million the year before.
88 independent growers across Kenya. Over 1,600 unique varieties in our range. Flowers reaching the UK, the Middle East, Japan and new markets as far apart as Namibia and Poland.
Valentine's Day 2025 was our biggest ever, up 39% on the previous year. UK Mother's Day sales tripled year on year. Eight new growers joined our network. Three new members joined our team.
88.3% of what we sourced was FSI compliant, responsibly produced product. That number continues to move in the right direction.
Twenty years of building something we are proud of. More to share very soon.

There is something that happens in a face to face conversation that does not happen on a video call.
You read the room differently. You pick up on things that do not come through on a screen. You have the conversation that was not on the agenda but turned out to be the most useful one.
The floriculture industry runs on relationships. Trust built over years, renewed in person. The buyers who visit Kenya, who see the farms, who sit across a table and ask hard questions, those are the relationships that tend to hold when things get complicated.
June is a good time to be in Nairobi.

Close to one year ago, The Flower Hub became a certified B Corporation.
It was not a decision we made quickly. The process took the best part of a year from when we committed to it seriously, covering every part of how we operate, governance, workers, community, environment and how we serve our customers.
What it required us to do was look honestly at what we were already doing and where we needed to go further. Some things we were proud of. Some areas needed work. That honesty is actually the point of the process.
B Corp certification is not a destination. It is a framework for continuous improvement. One year in, we are more certain of that than ever.

A question we take seriously: if we ask our growers to prove their commitment to people and planet, what are we doing ourselves to prove ours?
That question was part of what led us to B Corp certification. It is also why we are members of FSI and submit our sourcing figures quarterly. And it is why responsible sourcing, for us, is not a marketing position. It is an operational standard.
We currently source 85% of our flowers from FSI compliant producers, farms with globally benchmarked accreditations covering social standards, environmental practice and good agricultural practice.
The remaining 15% is not a footnote. It is a target we are actively working toward.

One of the more interesting things you learn after twenty years in this industry is that quality means something different depending on who is buying.
A wholesaler in Japan has different specification requirements to a retail chain in Germany. A florist in the UK values something different to an event buyer in the Middle East.
This is not a problem. It is actually the point.
Sourcing well is not about finding the best flower in an abstract sense. It is about understanding exactly what your customer needs and making sure that is what arrives.
That level of specificity requires knowledge of the product, knowledge of the farms, and a relationship with the buyer that goes beyond a purchase order. It takes time to build. It is very hard to replicate quickly.

Twenty years ago The Flower Hub was built around a simple idea.
Remove the complexity between a great farm and a great buyer. Make the supply chain shorter, smarter and more honest.
Two decades on, the farms we started with are still growing for us. The buyers we built relationships with in those early years are still ordering. The team that makes it work has grown into something we are genuinely proud of.
Not much about the flower business is simple. But the reason we are still here is.

Supply disruption in floriculture does not announce itself.
Weather events, flight cancellations, political instability, a crop that underperforms unexpectedly. Any one of these can leave a buyer short, often with very little notice.
The way most buyers find out their supplier has a resilience problem is when it becomes their problem.
Working across a grower base that spans different regions and altitudes in Kenya, and using over a dozen airlines weekly, means that when one route or one crop is affected, we have options. Your order still moves.
Resilience is not something you appreciate until you need it. By then it is too late to build it.

There is a man on a farm in Naivasha who has been grading roses for eleven years.
He can assess a stem in seconds. Head size, stem strength, bud stage, any sign of damage in transit. A skill that took years to develop and that no automated system has yet matched at scale.
He does not appear on any invoice. His name is not on any certification.
But the quality you receive depends, in no small part, on people exactly like him.
