When we became a certified B Corporation last year, we went through a process that covered how we govern the business, how we treat our team, how we manage our environmental impact, how we source, and what we give back to the communities we operate in.

The certification that exists now is harder to get.

B Corp has just overhauled its standards. The points-based system is gone. Every company now has to meet specific requirements in seven areas, including climate action, human rights, and fair work. Independent auditors verify it. You cannot offset a gap in one area with a strong score in another.

Our recertification comes in 2027. We are already working through what the new standards require.

Farmers around Lake Naivasha have watched the water come for their greenhouses.

Slowly at first. A few centimetres each year. Then faster. Packhouses that sat well back from the shore are now flooded. Greenhouses that took years to build are gone. Families who worked on those farms have had to move.

The lake that built Kenya's flower industry is rising because of the same climate instability the whole industry is being asked to address.

For decades, if you bought a flower in New York or Toronto, it almost certainly came from Colombia or Ecuador.

Kenya was the answer for Europe. South America was the answer for the Americas.

That is beginning to change. Kenyan exporters are building direct relationships with US and Canadian buyers. Sea freight is making longer distances more viable. And the certification and quality standards that built Kenya's European dominance are exactly what North American retail buyers are starting to ask for.

The world is getting smaller for Kenyan flowers. 🌍🌹

There is a woman in London who buys flowers every Thursday.

Not for anyone. Not for an occasion. Just because she decided a few years ago that her kitchen table should always have something alive on it.

She is not unusual anymore. Personal use has overtaken gifting as the largest reason people buy cut flowers globally. The industry that spent decades planning around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day is now dealing with a customer who does not need a reason.

Kenya grows flowers year-round. Every week, not just in February.

That is not a coincidence. It is exactly what this market now needs.

She does not think about Valentine's Day in February.

She thinks about it now, in August, when the decisions that will determine the quality of every stem sent out in six months are still being made. Which varieties to grow. How to manage the crop through the coming months. When to cut to hit the right bud stage for a buyer in Amsterdam who needs flowers on shelves by February 13th.

The flower on a shop shelf on Valentine's Day is the result of months of quiet, precise decisions made by people most buyers will never meet.

That is the industry. And it is extraordinary.

Flowers are jobs. Flowers are school fees. Flowers are healthcare.

This is what Kenya Flower Council CEO Clement Tulezi said at IFTEX 2026 in front of 210 exhibitors and buyers from across the world.

Behind a USD 1.15 billion industry is a workforce of more than 200,000 people and the five million others whose lives are connected to them. A child in school in Naivasha because their mother grades roses at 5 am. A family with access to a clinic because the farm they work on holds a Fairtrade certification.

That is what this industry actually is. The flowers are just the beginning.

Last month, European food safety auditors came to Kenya.

Not to inspect one farm. To audit the entire national system for controlling pesticide residues and plant health across Kenya's export sector.

Kenya passed.

That matters because it means the framework that governs how flowers are grown, inspected and exported here meets European standards not just on individual certified farms, but at a national level.

The industry has spent decades building toward this kind of credibility. It is worth knowing it is there.

Day two at Wildfire Flowers. Microscopes out. Compost piles being built.

Looking at what is living in the soil before deciding how to make it healthier. That is not a small thing. A gram of healthy soil can contain billions of microorganisms. Knowing what is there and what is missing is where good farming decisions start.

This is the work that happens long before a flower is ever cut.

Two days. A composting workshop. A farm learning how to put more back into the ground than it takes out.

Wildfire Flowers is hosting a Regenerative Agriculture Rapid Action Clinic with iCOW, focused on composting practices that build long-term soil health.

The flowers from a well-managed farm are better. Not marginally. Measurably. Stronger stems, more consistent quality, longer vase life.

This is what investing in the future of a farm actually looks like.
