Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers whose work often begins before the house wakes. The ones who rise quietly and keep things moving, whose care fills the day in ways few people think to count.
On my table today are books of women artists, including Barbara Hepworth. In Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life by Eleanor Clayton, Hepworth wrote of working with her child close by:
“My son Paul was born and, with him in his cot or on a rug at my feet, my carving developed and strengthened.”
A little reminder that for many women, the work of making and the work of mothering have always lived side by side.
And a special thought for Muslim mothers in these last days of Ramadan. Through illness, through the turning of hormones, through nights spent nursing little ones, and even on the days you cannot fast but still rise in the dark to prepare sehri for your growing children.
None of this is lost. May Allah see it all and return it to you in mercy and blessing.
