Today has provided a monumental occasion; the opening recital of our G.P England project in Chichester. Margaret Philips played a wonderful program, full of colour and variety, played with such beautiful elegance. This was a very poignant occasion, where one person was missing, and I wish Dominic Gwynn could have been with us. I dedicate this organ to Dominic, his legacy will live on with us at Goetze and Gwynn.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dominic Gwynn, on Friday the 24th of May 2024, after having cancer for a year and a half. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Dominic was a pioneer, author, historian, a doting father, grandfather and husband, an organ builder, and conservator. His work in the field of historic restoration and reconstruction, along with his research into the pre-Victorian English organ, made him a leading light in the organ building and early music worlds.

We have truly reached the end of an era.

The team at Goetze and Gwynn will keep the extraordinary legacy left to us by Dominic alive. There are many organ builders around the world now who have passed through the workshops of Martin Goetze and Dominic Gwynn Ltd., who have gone into the world having been taught great respect and craftsmanship. We will continue this work to the best of our ability, restoring, reconstructing and teaching, dedicated to the memory of Dominic and Martin.

To Dominic’s family and many friends around the world, we offer our sincere condolences.

Well, it has been an exciting start to the year so far, with the winter maintenance of the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool Wurlitzer, spring maintenance of the Thursford Collection Wurlitzer organ, in Norfolk, and the ongoing finishing of our 1813 George Pike England recreation for St John’s Chapel, Chichester. In the workshop are two restoration projects, with the pipework and keyboards of Holy Trinity Minchinhampton being worked on, along with the soundboards of our Middleton Stoney project.
At the same time, we are also attending the Wurlitzer organ of the College Claparède in Geneva, to ensure the festival based around the organ goes ahead without a hitch: or at least we hope it does!

We are recruiting!!
Are you a trained or experienced organ builder looking for the next challenge in your career?
Martin Goetze and Dominic Gwynn Ltd. are looking to recruit two full-time organ builders based at our workshops on the Welbeck estate in North Nottinghamshire.
As we run a fairly small workshop, you will be doing a lot of diverse organ building; you may also be mentoring within a small team. The right candidate may wish to join the management team and shape the future of the firm.
We have a well-equipped workshop, with separate machine shop, and metalwork shop.
Our project list includes Victorian and Georgian church organ restorations, a Wurlitzer theatre organ in Geneva, work up to 2026 and beyond, a large new organ for a UK church, and more projects waiting for signing.
For more information, and details of how to get in touch/apply, please have a look on our website: https://www.goetzegwynn.co.uk/current-job-vacancies/.

Our George Pike England recreation is going up in St John’s Chapel Chichester. The culmination of a year’s work, whilst doing various smaller projects too. Next to site will be the stop action, then console and casework. One of the joys of having a fairly large workshop space is having a metal workshop, and a woodwork workshop…. What we don’t have is a space dedicated to finishing woodwork, such as the Walnut case, so now the organ is no longer erected in the workshop, the case can take the finish without so much dust about, and we have somewhere to stand the large frames and panels!
