Sometimes the best outcomes come from looking a little closer 🐛➡️🦋

While checking one of our contract-grown batches of Helichrysum, Shannon spotted a group of caterpillars that had been feeding on the plants. As part of crop management, they would normally have been controlled to protect the contract.

Instead, she carefully collected them and took them home, where they safely completed their life cycle.

A few weeks later, they emerged as beautiful Red Admiral butterflies, ready to be released.

It’s a lovely reminder of the balance we strive for at Palmstead. While protecting the quality of our plants is essential, we’re always looking for opportunities to support wildlife wherever we can.

A brilliant result, and a great example of the passion our team has for both plants and nature. 🦋🌿

A little trim now goes a long way ✂️

Once your lavender has finished flowering, giving it a light trim helps keep plants compact, tidy and healthy.

Regular pruning encourages bushier growth, helps maintain shape and reduces the risk of plants becoming woody over time. Just be careful not to cut back into old wood, as lavender doesn’t always regenerate from it.

A simple job that helps keep your lavender looking its best year after year.

Palmstead Picks: August🌿

As late summer reaches its peak, August is all about long-lasting colour, graceful movement and plants that continue to perform well into the season. Here are five favourites from the Palmstead team.

🌼 Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’
Elegant white flowers with golden centres bring brightness to borders from late summer into autumn. A reliable choice for adding height and light to partially shaded spaces.

💜 Aster × frikartii ‘Mönch’
One of the longest-flowering asters, producing masses of lavender-blue blooms that are loved by bees and other pollinators well into autumn.

🌾 Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora ‘Norwich Canary’
Soft yellow flowers held above upright foliage create a striking display, adding warmth, texture and movement to sunny planting schemes.

✨ Solidago ‘Goldkind’
Compact spikes of golden-yellow flowers provide vibrant late-season colour while attracting a wide range of pollinating insects.

🌿 Polypodium vulgare
A native evergreen fern that thrives in shade, offering year-round texture and structure beneath trees, in woodland gardens or shaded landscapes.

We were delighted to be invited to the official opening of two incredible new enclosures at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent.

Working alongside their Head Gardener, it was a privilege for Palmstead to supply plants that help create naturalistic habitats for these remarkable species. Seeing the finished enclosures and the role thoughtful planting plays in enriching the animals’ environment made the day even more special.

One of the highlights was seeing Ursa, an Eurasian lynx rescued from Ukraine, take her first steps into her new forever home. After spending three years living in converted horse stables in a war zone, she has now moved into the Sanctuary’s purpose-built Small Cat Rescue Centre, alongside other rescued wildcats

We also had the opportunity to see the new Rusty-spotted Cat Conservation Centre, the UK’s largest habitat dedicated to the world’s smallest wildcat. The facility has been carefully designed to replicate the species’ native environment and will play an important role in future conservation and breeding efforts.

It’s projects like these that remind us how plants can contribute to so much more than beautiful landscapes, they help create environments that support wildlife welfare, conservation and education.

A huge congratulations to everyone at The Big Cat Sanctuary on this remarkable achievement, and thank you for allowing us to play a small part in such an important project. 🌿🐾

Behind the Bark: Richard 🌿

Meet Richard, Palmstead's Logistics Controller.

For the last six years, Richard has been making sure plants arrive, leave and reach customers in the best possible condition. Working across both goods in and goods out, his team handles everything from receiving deliveries of pots, compost and plants to preparing orders for dispatch and collection.

Every plant is checked, watered, cleaned up where needed and carefully packed onto Danish trolleys before it leaves the nursery, helping to ensure customers receive plants at their very best.

One thing people might not expect? Before joining Palmstead, Richard served for more than 23 years in the British Army, achieving the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2. While horticulture was a new challenge, his logistics expertise and problem-solving skills have made him an invaluable part of the team.

Favourite plant? 🌳 Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' (with Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' a close second) - a tree he also enjoys growing at home.

Did you know we use nature to help protect our plants? 🐞🌿

At Palmstead, we've worked closely with Biobest for many years, using biological pest control as part of our integrated pest management programme.

Instead of relying solely on chemical treatments, we introduce beneficial insects and mites that naturally help control common pests such as aphids, thrips and spider mites.

We're constantly looking at new ways to improve our growing methods, reduce chemical inputs and create the healthiest possible environment for our plants.

For our customers, that means healthier, stronger plants, grown using a proactive approach that prioritises long-term plant health and sustainable production. It also means we're continually investing in growing practices that improve crop quality and resilience.
