Looking for larger shrubs for an upcoming project?

For schemes where you’re looking to create more immediate impact, our larger shrub range offers established plants with greater height and structure from the outset.

A few currently worth considering include:

🌿 Acer palmatum – available in 20L at 175–200cm, a versatile Japanese maple offering attractive foliage and fantastic autumn colour.

🌿 Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’ – with finely cut foliage and excellent seasonal colour, bringing texture and interest to planting schemes.

🌿 Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ – offering seasonal foliage alongside its distinctive coral-red stems for interest beyond the growing season.

🌿 Camellia japonica ‘Bonomiana’ – an established evergreen option with spring flowers and year-round structure.

🌿 Camellia japonica ‘Lady Campbell’ – another evergreen choice, with rich red flowers providing plenty of spring colour.

When should you start thinking about a contract grow?

The earlier, the better.

Ideally, it’s a conversation to have while your project is still in the design or planning stage. Many plants take time to reach the right size and quality, especially when you’re working with specific varieties or larger quantities.

Contract growing is particularly valuable for large schemes, public realm projects, and new developments, where consistency across the planting is key.

At Palmstead, we work with you to align the growing schedule with your project timeline, so when the project is ready for planting, the plants are too.

What difference does Plant Healthy make commercially?🌿

Malcolm from Plant Healthy recently visited us here at Palmstead, spending time with different members of our team to talk about what Plant Healthy means in practice.

While walking around the nursery, Malcolm caught up with Geoff, our Head of Commerce, to talk about the difference Plant Healthy is making to the relationships we have with both our customers and suppliers.

For customers, Geoff has seen a growing awareness around where plants come from, their traceability and the questions they should be asking, particularly when it comes to imported plants.

From a supplier perspective, it’s helping to build greater trust within the industry and strengthen relationships with the suppliers we work alongside.

The more we can talk about plant health, share information and encourage the right questions to be asked throughout the supply chain, the better informed we can all be about the plants we buy, grow and supply.

This is another small snippet from the conversations we had with Malcolm during his visit, with plenty more still to share 🌱

Meet our Transport Team 🚛

There’s a lot that goes into getting an order from our nursery to your project, and our Transport Team plays a big part in making it happen.

From planning routes and coordinating our vehicles to working closely with the wider Logistics Team, they help make sure plants leave Palmstead safely and deliveries run as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

With orders heading out from the nursery each day, there’s always plenty to organise...and often an early start involved!

What is a contract grow?

It’s when plants are grown specifically for your project, months or even years in advance.

Rather than relying on what’s available on the open market at the time, your plants are reserved and grown specifically for your scheme in mind from the very beginning, making sure it's at the required specification for your project.

Behind the Bark: Pete 🌿

This month, we’re introducing Pete, our Head of Supply Chain Management, who has been part of Palmstead since he first joined us as a 16-year-old summer worker.

Since then, Pete has worked his way through almost every area of the nursery, including propagation, potting, picking, packing, deliveries, goods in and out, operations, procurement and sales. Today, he uses all of that experience to manage our supply chain and help make sure we have the plants our customers need, when they need them.

It’s a role that involves a lot of forward planning. Plant availability can change quickly, particularly when larger orders come in, so Pete works closely with our Production and Technical teams to monitor stock, adjust potting priorities and plan for the seasons ahead.

As Pete puts it, it can be a bit like a game of chess. You always need to be thinking a few moves ahead!

And after all those years surrounded by plants, does he have a favourite? Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vanille Fraise’currently takes the top spot, with its flowers changing from creamy white to pink throughout the summer.

From a summer job at 16 to Head of Supply Chain Management, Pete has certainly seen a lot of Palmstead over the years...and knows the nursery inside out.

This month, we’re highlighting three beautiful specimens that offer plenty of interest as we head towards autumn:

🍂 Parrotia persica – a fantastic specimen for seasonal interest, with foliage taking on rich shades of yellow, orange and red through autumn.
🌳 Stewartia pseudocamellia – an elegant tree offering interest throughout the seasons, from summer flowers to autumn colour and attractive bark.
🌿 Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ – particularly striking for its coppery-pink peeling bark, bringing structure and interest even after the leaves have fallen.

What does a Plant Healthy audit actually look like at Palmstead?🌿

Exactly as the nursery looks on any other day.

In our latest reel, Malcolm, Director of Plant Healthy, walks and talks with our Technical Manager, Jess, to understand what being Plant Healthy Certified means in practice.

For us, an audit isn’t about preparing the nursery to look its best. It’s an opportunity to have an independent expert look closely at how we work, speak directly with the people caring for our crops and identify where we can continue to improve.

Across 125 acres and a huge range of plants, plant health is something our team is thinking about every day, from regular crop walking to identifying and managing pests and diseases.

Being open to scrutiny is an important part of maintaining those standards and, ultimately, giving our customers confidence in the plants they buy from us.

This is just a small snippet of the conversations we had with Malcolm during his time at the nursery. We covered plenty more, and we can’t wait to share it with you over the coming weeks. 🌱
