Observations from the Akwatia Elections
1. From the records and voting patterns, Akwatia appears to be a Swing Seat.
2. However, there were reports of thugs being used to intimidate voters, even in polling stations where the NPP traditionally dominates.
3. On the other hand, NDC supporters were given strong assurances of protection from their internal security, which encouraged them to come out and vote in large numbers.
4. Two cases of alleged vote-buying were observed, reportedly involving NDC officials. In one instance, a bundle of cash was found on an NDC official who even attempted to offer money to a JoyNews reporter to discourage them from filming.
5. The police, once again, seemed to fall short in carrying out their duties effectively, similar to what was witnessed during the Ablekuma elections.
6. Finally, the choice of candidate appeared to be strategic on the part of Akwatia’s voters. Opting for someone aligned with the current government was seen as a way to secure promises of development and also to gain relief from the galamsey task force operations.
