God have mercy on some of our young generation.

There is this young plumber I have been using for the past four or five years. Whenever I have a plumbing problem at home, I call him. And whenever he charges me for his work, I almost always pay him extra. I do this deliberately because I see a young man trying to make a living, and I believe that one of the ways we can help young people grow is by supporting and patronizing their businesses.
This morning, I noticed a problem with one of my pipes and called him. He told me what we needed to buy. Because I knew the particular quality of materials I wanted, I had a fair idea of how much everything should cost. I knew it shouldn't even cost GH₵2,000.
Still, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked him to go to the shop, get an invoice and send it to me so I could pay directly to them.
About an hour later, he sent me an invoice for GH₵2,700 with a guys number to send momo.
Immediately, something didn't sit right with me.
I searched for the company online from the invoicename, found their contact number and called them directly. The owner answered. I listed exactly the same items on the invoice my guy brought and asked him to calculate the total for me.
The actual total was GH₵1,745— a difference of GH₵ 950 cedis from same shop.
What shocked me even more was what I later discovered. Apparently, someone working at the shop had produced an invoice book similar to the company's original invoice book. When customers come, prices can be inflated, an invoice issued, and payment directed accordingly.
I eventually bought the items myself, paid the correct amount and forwarded the genuine invoice to the young plumber.
Up to now, he has not replied.
And that is the painful part.
For four or five years, I have deliberately paid this young man more than he asked for because I wanted to encourage him. I wanted to see him grow. I wanted to support a young person who was working hard rather than sitting at home doing nothing.
So why destroy years of trust for GH₵950
It is dishonesty, and dishonesty eventually destroys opportunities.
Sometimes young people complain that nobody wants to support them, patronize them or give them opportunities. But when someone finally trusts you, please protect that trust. Your greatest business asset may not be your tools, your certificate or even your skill.
It may simply be your name and your integrity.
Money gained dishonestly today can cost you relationships, recommendations and opportunities worth far more tomorrow.
May God help our young people understand that a good name is still worth more than quick money.

Please take a moment to read why I am concerned about proposals to restrict travellers to two phones, limit duty-free items, and introduce similar measures at our airports.

I have personally experienced a situation at Ghana’s airport that has stayed with me.

After a four-week visit to Ghana, I was returning to Sweden 🇸🇪 and travelling with a child who was born in Ghana but is a Swedish national. The parents had recently obtained a new Swedish passport for the child through the Swedish Embassy in Nigeria.

At the airport, immigration officers directed us to a senior officer. I was told that there was no stamp in the child's newly issued Swedish passport. I repeatedly asked what kind of stamp was required and who was responsible for putting it there. I was told it was the embassy's responsibility.

I was then asked to pay $200 which later changed to $150.

I paid the amount, but when I requested an official receipt, it was refused. I was even warned that I could be asked to pay more if I continued demanding a receipt.

There were other travellers in the office who were also trying to negotiate the amounts they were being asked to pay.

I remember the date and time, and I am willing to provide those details if anyone genuinely wants to investigate what happened.

This is exactly why I worry when I hear about introducing additional rules that could give officials even more discretion to stop, question and potentially charge travellers.

If Ghana needs to collect revenue, let it be done through clear laws, transparent procedures and official receipts — not through systems that can leave ordinary travellers vulnerable to unofficial payments or abuse of authority.

We already have enough concerns about corruption at our airports and borders. We should be closing the doors to corruption, not creating new opportunities for it.

🇬🇭 Please reconsider this approach. Ghana deserves better.
