Είθε το Πανάγιο Πνεύμα να ανοίξει τις καρδιές μας..
Η κλειστή καρδιά δεν έχει πληρωθή ακόμη υπό του Πνεύματος του Αγίου.
Είναι βουτηγμένη στην μοναξιά της, στην θλίψι της, στην αγωνία της, στον προβληματισμό της, στην ερημιά της. Είναι άδεια.
Όπως, όταν το στομάχι μας μείνη άδειο, διαμαρτύρεται και συρρικνούται, κάτι ανάλογο συμβαίνει και με την κλειστή καρδιά.
Ὅλος ὁ ἄνθρωπος κλείνεται ἐν ἑαυτῷ, ἀντί νά ἀνοιχθῆ πρός τόν Θεόν, ἀντί νά χωρέση ὁ Θεός καί νά τά σκεπάση ὅλα.
Τότε αὐτός ὁ ἄνθρωπος τρώγεται μέ τά νύχια του, βγάζει τά μάτια του μόνος του, τσακώνεται μέ τόν ἑαυτό του. Οἱ λογισμοί του, οἱ περιπέτειές του, τά πάθη του, οἱ νόμοι συγκρούονται μέσα του.
Καί τί γίνεται ὁ ἄνθρωπος;
Ὅπως κάποιος πού κρατάει ἕνα μαχαίρι κόβει τά πάντα καί τά πετάει, ἔτσι καί ἡ ψυχή τοῦ ἀνθρώπου διασπᾶται, κατακρεουργεῖται. Καί ἀφοῦ ἡ ψυχή εἶναι κλειστή, σκοτεινή, ἀκυριάρχητη, διότι ἔκανε αὐτοκράτορά της κάποιον πού δέν μπορεῖ νά τῆς δώση εἰρήνη καί ἠρεμία, μέσα της βασιλεύει ἡ παγωνιά, οἱ φόβοι, ἡ μοναξιά.

May the Most Holy Spirit open our hearts.
The closed heart has not yet been filled by the Holy Spirit.
It is immersed in its loneliness, its sorrow, its anxiety, its worries, its desolation. It is empty.
Just as, when our stomach remains empty, it protests and contracts, something similar happens to the closed heart.
The whole person becomes shut up within himself, instead of opening himself to God, instead of making room for God to enter and cover all things.
Then that person consumes himself, harms himself, and struggles against himself. His thoughts, his trials, his passions, and the various laws within him clash with one another.
And what becomes of such a person?
Just as someone holding a knife cuts everything to pieces and throws it away, so too the human soul is torn apart and mutilated. And because the soul is closed, dark, and without self-mastery, for it has made as its ruler one who cannot give it peace and tranquility, coldness reigns within it, together with fear and loneliness.

The love of God and the justice of God are uncreated energies, my beloved. The nearness of God, the word of God, and God’s relationship with us are all divine realities. We truly touch God.
What was it that appeared in the Theotokos? It was the uncreated radiance of the Divinity that united us with the Most Holy Theotokos.
How does the Holy Relic unite us with God and with the Saint? Through the Uncreated Divine Energy that abides in the Holy Relic.
How is it that I drink the holy water and my sins are cleansed? How is it that I am anointed with the Holy Oil and become healed through this Mystery? It is through the Uncreated, so to speak, reality, the Uncreated Divine Energy ,of Holy Unction.
You see that everything depends upon this mystical teaching of our Church.

Κάποιος εἶναι ἄρρωστος καὶ ταξιδεύει στὴν Ἀμερικὴ γιὰ νὰ βρει τὴν ὑγεία του. Φθάνει ἐκεῖ, τελικῶς ὅμως δὲν ἀσχολεῖται μὲ τὴν ὑγεία του ἀλλὰ μὲ πολλὰ ἄλλα. Δὲν περιγράφει δηλαδή στὸν γιατρὸ τὴν ἐξέλιξη τῆς ἀρρώστιας του, δὲν δείχνει διάθεση νὰ ἐφαρμόσει ὅ,τι τοῦ πει. Δὲν ἦταν κρῖμα τὸ ὑπερπόντιο ταξίδι ποὺ ἔκανε; Ἐπιστρέφοντας ἐν συνεχεία στὴν πατρίδα του χωρίς καλὴ ὑγεία, μπορεῖ νὰ συζητὰ γιὰ πολλὰ ὡραῖα πράγματα ποὺ εἶδε στὴν ξένη χώρα, γιὰ τὶς ἀνέσεις ποὺ ὑπάρχουν ἐκεῖ, ἀλλὰ ἀφοῦ δὲν ἀνέκτησε τὴν ὑγεία του, τί κέρδισε; Τὸ ἴδιο παθαίνομε καὶ ἐμεῖς, ὅταν πᾶμε στὸν Γέροντα καὶ δὲν ζητᾶμε τὸν Θεόν, δὲν κυνηγᾶμε τὸν Θεόν, δὲν ὑπομένουμε τὸν Θεόν. Ἂν ζητᾶμε ἄλλα πράγματα, ἄδικα πᾶμε στὸν Γέροντα. Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ποὺ ζητάει τὸν Θεὸν καὶ τὸν ὑπομένει, εἶναι πάντα ἤρεμος καὶ γαλήνιος, εἶναι πάντα ὡραιότατος· καὶ στὸν πόνο καὶ στὴν ἀτυχία καὶ στὸν κατατρεγμὸ καὶ στὴν ἀδυναμία καὶ στὴν λήθη, παντοῦ.

If someone is ill and travels to USA in order to recover his health, but upon arriving there he concerns himself not with his healing but with many other things, what has he gained? He does not describe to the doctor the course of his illness, nor does he show any willingness to follow the doctor’s instructions. Was not his journey across the ocean in vain? Returning afterward to his homeland without good health, he may speak of many beautiful things he saw in that foreign land, and of the comforts found there; yet since he did not regain his health, what profit did he have?
The same happens to us when we go to the Elder and do not seek God, do not pursue God, do not wait patiently for God. If we seek other things, we go to the Elder in vain. The person who seeks God and patiently awaits Him is always calm and peaceful, always radiant, in pain, in misfortune, in persecution, in weakness, and even in forgetfulness; everywhere.

Άφησε τον Θεόν να κανονίζει την πορεία σου. Αυτός γνωρίζει προτού ζητήσεις κάτι. Ζήτα λοιπόν να σου δώσει μετάνοια, να σου συγχωρέσει τις πτώσεις σου, και για τα υπόλοιπα Εκείνος ξέρει.
Αυτός ξέρει και τι ανέμους θα δώσει, αν θα σου πάρει την χαρά και θα την κάνει στενοχώρια, αν θα σου πάρει την στεναχώρια και θα σου την κάνει χαρά, αν θα σου δώσει επιτυχία ή αποτυχία, αν θα σου κόψει τα πάθη ή αν θα σου τα αφήσει, αν θα σου θεραπεύσει την αρρώστια και θα σου δώσει υγεία, ή αν θα σου πάρει την υγεία και θα σου δώσει αρρώστια.

Βλέποντας τους πειρασμούς, μας πιάνει μία τραγική δειλία.
Όμως όχι!
Χίλια χρόνια να παιδεύεσαι μέσα στην αμαρτία να την νικήσεις, θα πας στον παράδεισο, επειδή ο αγώνας σου δείχνει ότι θέλεις τον παράδεισο, και ο Θεός μας δίνει αυτό που θέλομε.
Άρα, το πρόβλημα είναι όχι τι κάνω, αλλά τι θέλω ή τι αγωνίζομαι να επιτύχω.
Μη φοβάσαι λοιπόν και μην ανησυχείς, εάν βλέπεις ότι σήμερα είσαι αμαρτωλός.
Σήμερα ναι, είμαι αμαρτωλός, όμως δεν εγκαταλείπω τον Θεόν μου και αυτόν παρακαλώ να με βοηθήσει.
Όσο και να θέλωμε, μέσα στην εκκλησία μας θα ζούμε πλάι πλάι δίκαιοι και αμαρτωλοί. Θα συζούμε άγιοι και εμπαθείς.
Αλλά οι άγιοι μπορεί να πέσουν αύριο, ενώ ο εμπαθής προσελκύει την προσοχή του Θεού και αύριο πιθανόν να γίνει άγιος.
Θυμάστε τι ωραία που λέγει ο προφήτης Ησαΐας: «Συμβοσκηθήσεται λύκος μετά αρνός και πάρδαλις συναναπαύσεται ερίφω».
Και επί τέλους, ας μην ξεχνάμε ότι το πάθος δεν θα το νικήσωμε εμείς.
Μπορείς εσύ να βάλεις το χέρι σου μέσα στην καρδιά σου;
Δεν μπορείς.
Μόνον ο Θεός μπορεί.
Μπορείς να βάλεις το χέρι σου στην ψυχή σου και να την κάνεις διαφορετική;
Δεν μπορείς.
Τα πάθη διώχνονται από τον Θεόν.
Καμιά φορά λέμε: Ωχ, Θεέ μου, πώς θα μπορέσω να κόψω αυτό το πάθος;
Μα, δεν έχεις να κόψεις τίποτε εσύ, θα σου το κόψει ο Θεός.
Όσο και αν θέλεις και αν τρέχεις, δεν θα κάνεις εσύ τίποτε.
«Το εκριζώσαι την αμαρτίαν και το συνόν κακόν, λέγει ένας άγιος, τούτο τη θεία δυνάμει μόνο δυνατόν εστί κατορθώσαι».
Λοιπόν, ειρήνευε, έχε θάρρος εσύ!
Μα, δεν μπορεί ο Θεός να σου κόψει το πάθος;
Βεβαίως μπορεί.
Και αφού σε κάλεσε για την αρετή, θα το κάνει ο Θεός.
Εσύ πάλεψε όσο θέλεις, αγωνίζου μέσα στην ζωή, όχι για να κόψεις το πάθος σου, αλλά για να δείξεις την αγάπη σου στον Θεόν.

Seeing temptations, we are seized by a kind of tragic cowardice.
But no!
Even if you struggle for a thousand years within sin in order to overcome it, you will enter Paradise, because your struggle shows that you desire Paradise, and God grants us what we truly desire.
Therefore, the issue is not what I do, but what I want, or what I strive to attain.
Do not be afraid, then, nor be anxious, if you see that today you are a sinner.
Today, yes, I am a sinner; yet I do not abandon my God, and to Him I pray that He may help me.
No matter how much we wish otherwise, within the Church we shall live side by side, both the righteous and the sinful. The saints and the passionate will dwell together.
Yet the saints may fall tomorrow, while the passionate man may draw the attention of God and, perhaps tomorrow, become a saint.
Do you remember how beautifully the Prophet Isaiah says:
“The wolf shall feed with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat.”
And finally, let us not forget that it is not we who conquer the passions.
Can you place your hand inside your heart?
You cannot.
Only God can.
Can you place your hand within your soul and make it different?
You cannot.
The passions are driven away by God.
Sometimes we say: “O my God, how shall I be able to cut off this passion?”
But you have nothing to cut off yourself; God will take it away from you.
No matter how much you wish or strive, you will accomplish nothing on your own.
“To uproot sin and the evil that accompanies it,” says a saint, “this can be accomplished only by divine power.”
Therefore, be at peace; take courage!
Can God not remove your passion?
Certainly He can.
And since He has called you to virtue, He will do it.
As for you, struggle as much as you wish; strive throughout your life, not to cut off your passion, but to show your love for God.

Όταν κάποιος αμαρτήσει, λόγω του εγωισμού του, είναι βαρύς. Δεν μπορεί να διαβάσει, ούτε να προσευχηθεί, διότι του φαίνεται βουνό η προσευχή, ούτε να γονατίσει, διότι του φαίνεται ότι θα σπάσουν τα πλευρά του! Αφού, λοιπόν, δεν μπορείς να προσευχηθείς, ούτε να αγρυπνήσεις, τουλάχιστον ανάγκασε τον εαυτό σου να μελετά τους Ψαλμούς. Οι Ψαλμοί εκφράζουν ικεσία, μετάνοια, δοξολογία, ευχαριστία, περιέχουν αισθήματα και βιώματα που ανασταίνουν και τον πιο αδύνατο άνθρωπο. Όπως, όταν ο άλλος χάσει τις αισθήσεις του, του δίνεις λίγο ρακί και ανασταίνεται, έτσι ακριβώς ανασταίνεται κανείς και με τους ψαλμούς. Διάβαζε, λοιπόν, Ψαλμούς και θα δεις ότι θα αναστηθείς κι εσύ.

When a person falls into sin out of egoism, the soul becomes heavy. He cannot read, nor can he pray; prayer feels like a mountain, and even kneeling seems unbearable, as if his very body would break.
Therefore, if you are unable to pray or to keep vigil, at least compel yourself to read the Psalms.
The Psalms contain supplication, repentance, glorification, and thanksgiving; they express deep feelings and spiritual experiences that can revive even the weakest person.
Just as when someone loses consciousness you give them a little strong drink and they come to, so too the soul is revived through the reading of the Psalms.
So, read the Psalms, and you will see that, little by little, your own soul will be restored.

But how do we communicate with God? Let me give you an example for a moment, so that we may understand better.
I remember someone who struggled and longed to reach heights of holiness. He was a humble man, yet his struggle seemed to lead nowhere. He fell into hardships, illnesses, and many troubles. He had mouths to feed. He had souls entrusted to him, souls to lead toward heavenly life. And he prayed to God. Yet he could do nothing; everything seemed dark to him. His heart felt empty. And he cried out to God.
At one moment, in despair, he rested his hand somewhere and suddenly became startled. He felt trembling, though he did not understand what had happened. He quickly took his prayer rope and placed it in his hand. Then he rested it on his left hand so that his right hand would remain free. And he said: “My God, I will not cease fasting unless You visit me. My God, I do not see You, yet You are present. Give me the traces of Your presence.”
Again a shiver came over him. It seemed to him as though there were a shadow behind him. He felt something that wiped away both his sweat and his tears, before his eyes were now filled with different tears, tears of joy and divine consolation.
