🎉 We're back! And so is our new tea of the year! It's been a long break from us at lockcha.com as Hong Kong was under COVID lockdown. Our physical locations are now open (see 樂茶軒 LockCha) and so as our online store! What's better than resuming with our green tea of the year - now available in both Longjing and Biluochun, our favourites.

This year the teas are harder to get due to lockdown situations in Hong Kong and the mainland. Our costs have gone up, but we're keeping our prices the same, hoping that you can all enjoy these two teas during this year. Please be aware that we have not resumed normal shipping times to all countries, so it will take longer to get to you. Nevertheless, good things take time, so order today❣️

🍵 One tea one story - “Taiwan’s God of tea" - Dongding Oolong 🍵

The origin of the Dongding Oolong (literally frozen top) tea comes from several accounts. One said that in 1855, a student named Lin Sanxian substituted Lin Fengchi to take a test in Fujian Province. When Lin returned to his hometown after becoming an imperial scholar, he brought back tea trees from the Wuyi Mountains as an gratitude. Lin planted 12 of them on the mountain next to Qilin Lake and became the beginning of Dongding Oolong.

The name of the mountain where these teas are grown is called "Dongding Mountain," which is derived from the Hakka dialect "King-ding" (literally frozen top). It is said that the ancestors had no shoes to wear and had to "climb to the top of the mountain with their toes frozen” in the cold winter. Before the popularity of high altitude tea, Dongding Oolong was very popular, and tea vendors crowded the area. However, soon after the high altitude oolong took the market by storm and few farmers actually grow tea in the area today.

LockCha Dongding Oolong is made using an "old-fashioned" method, which emphasizes the rich sweetness of the tea rather than the aroma. The process brings out the characteristic of the traditional Dongding Oolong. The tea is clear and delicate with floral fragrance.

🍵 One tea one story - "the original black tea" - Lapsang Souchong 🍵

The oldest black tea in the world was produced at Tongmuguan in Wuyishan, Fujian. In the high and cold mountains of Wuyi Tongmuguan, the natives use pinewood as fuel for fumigation to preserve tea. The end result is a black tea that can travel around the world. It is also very popular because of its unique pine smoke taste. "Lapsang" means authentic and "Souchong" means that its tea are small, and hence it's named Lapsang Souchong.

At the beginning of the 17th century, Lapsang Souchong was brought into Europe by Dutch merchants, and it became popular in the British royal family and throughout Europe, and set off the "afternoon tea" trend that has been passed down to this day. Since then, Lapsang Souchong black tea has become a symbol of Chinese red tea (black tea) in Europe, and has been recognized as the originator of black tea.

🐉 Dragon Boat Festival Traditions 🐉 Apart from eating rice dumplings to commemorate Qu Yuan, there are other lesser-known traditions on Dragon Boat Festival. For example, it is necessary to exorcise evils and disasters that day, because the fifth month of the lunar calendar was called the "evil month" and the fifth day was the "evil day." Therefore, the fifth day of May is the evil month and the evil day, which is the most taboo day of the ancients. Therefore, traditionally on Dragon Boat Festival people wear sachets, draws patterns on the forehead, and wraps colorful silk threads in order to repel mosquitoes, ward off evil spirits, fight off plagues, and pray for long life.

This year on Dragon Boat Festival, LockCha will provide pigments for everyone's to draw on their foreheads to relive the tradition. We will also be selling incense sachets and sticks made by Hong Kong Traditional Incense Culture at all LockCha locations. Their incenses are hand-made locally, with high quality, with a concept like LockCha’s. Finally, we will also be selling rice dumplings that you can "drink”, Naka and Badashan "rice dumplings" green tea. After ten years of aging, they are sweet and pure.

If you’re coming on the Dragon Boat Festival, please make a reservation for lunch, thank you for your support.
