【The Duke of Wellington】
It was indeed Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, who infamously described his common soldiers with this harsh insult.

Historical records however show a more complex context: The Duke was reacting to severe breakdowns in military discipline among his soldiers looting, pillaging and worse after a battle or while still on campaign!

This particular figure of the Duke is based on a photograph of actor Hugh Fraser who played the noble lord in the ‘Sharpe’ television series. At the last London December show I was fortunate to meet and talk with Hugh and obtain the photo the figure is based on.

【K&C’s Flakvierling Sd.kfz. 7/1 】
Here is a special preview of K&C’s upcoming Flakvierling Sd.kfz. 7/1, scheduled for release this September.

The Flakvierling Sd.kfz. 7/1 was a highly effective German self-propelled anti aircraft gun used by both the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe during the Second World War. It combined the sturdy Krauss-Maffei 8-ton Sd.Kfz.7 Half Track artillery vehicle with the 20mm Flakvierling 38 four-barrelled autocannon system.

Although designed to defend mobile armour and motorized infantry from low-flying Allied attack aircraft its massive volume of fire also made it much-feared as an anti-personnel and light anti-tank weapon in the ground support role.

K&C’s Flakvierling Sd.kfz. 7/1 20mm comes with 3 gunner figures. You can also see 3 more brand‑new, ‘Winter’ German K&C soldiers that you can add to this set.

【Richard the Lionheart】

Richard I... Good King Richard... Richard Coeur de Lion, call him what you will, was King of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He was also Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony and a host of other titles in France. Apart from his childhood in England most of his adult life was spent overseas in Aquitaine.

When he became King he led the Third Crusade to the Holy Land after the departure of Philip II of France. Although winning many notable victories over his Muslim opponent 'Saladin' he never managed to recapture Jerusalem.

Fondly remembered by his English subjects he in turn thought of them primarily as a useful source of taxes and revenue to pay for his foreign adventures.

In legend, popular books and movies "Richard the Lionheart" is usually portrayed as a kind, wise and benevolent ruler as opposed to his evil brother Prince John who acted as Regent throughout the King's long and frequent absences.

These standing and mounted figure depicts him bearing the emblem of the three lions on both chest and shield. First adopted by England's Plantagenet Kings in 1154, they have ever since come to symbolize the nation of England.

About The Warrior Priests...
All through Medieval history members of the Clergy took up arms to support various causes and their beliefs following leaders of their communities as well as some holy orders into battle and onto Crusades in foreign lands.

One of the major reasons for this was the fact that many churchmen themselves had been soldiers before becoming priests and believed their previous military experience would provide a distinct advantage for any military expedition.

During the course of the Crusades many hundreds of these ‘Warrior Priests’ journeyed to The Holy Land, sometimes on their own or as members of a larger organized group and even as part of the ‘entourage’ of a more senior ‘Fighting Bishop’, one of several who accompanied the Kings from different parts of Western Europe who fought in these crusades to recapture and defend Christendom and The Holy Land.

【The Knights of Bushido】
Samurai warriors lived and died by a strict, unwritten ethical code called ‘Bushido’ which translates to ‘The Way of The Warrior’. This code placed paramount importance on virtues such as: ‘Loyalty’…’Courage’... ‘Honour’… ‘Respect’… and ‘Honesty’.

These qualities also filtered down the chain of command to their foot soldiers, the Ashigaru.

【Tokugawa Ieyasu】
Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1615), the victor of Sekigahara, was the warrior, statesman and military mastermind who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate. His strategic genius ended a century of chaotic civil war and helped establish a dynastic military government in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) that secured over 250 years of uninterrupted internal peace and stability.

Our seated figure shows him on the day of battle wearing a mixture of traditional Japanese armour alongside contemporary European-style armour bought or gifted to him by traders from the West.
