Why do we band hurleys?

It’s always best to band a Hurley after a repair and not recommended to band a brand new Hurley

After the glue sets on a broken Hurley the steel banding is added to strength the repair I usually do 6/7 (No joke intended) nails per side on the top band

Even a repaired Hurley is still prone to warping it still needs to be treated as a new Hurley

Brand new Hurleys are not recommended to be banded right away as the Hurley needs to be “broken in”.

Although banding a brand new Hurley comes down to preference maybe to add some weight or improve feel of striking. Adding 2 bands can add up to 30/40 grams of weight to a Hurley

When repairing a Hurley the glueing is the foundation of the repair

At the start of this video I’m using a jigsaw to rough up the newly cut piece of ash to help the glue bind the ash together

The clamps are used to keep everything in line and presses the two pieces together removing any excess glue from inside the newly cut piece

As the glue dries it will expand into all the little roughed up cuts inside the Hurley

Once the Hurley has been banded it is best to leave the Hurley in a cool dry place for atleast a week to allow the glue to further set (the longer the better)
