Caudalie Vinoclean Cleansing Oil — €18.90
Avène Hydrance Aqua-Gel — €23.90

Your skin didn’t change in October. Your house did.

The heating went on about a fortnight ago, and that is the whole event. Every year, same month, same tight feeling after washing, and every year people decide their skin has suddenly become difficult.

It hasn’t. It’s answering the weather.

So I wrote the whole year down. Twelve months: what the Irish weather actually does, what your skin will do about it, and one change for each month. Not a new routine. Not a shopping list — several months need nothing bought at all, and it says so.

October’s change, since we’re in it: swap to a cream now, before anything cracks. Everyone does this in January. Doing it in October saves the winter.

I talk about your skin barrier far more than I talk about wrinkles, and it probably costs me sales.

The barrier is the thin top layer that keeps water in and the weather out. In Donegal that means wet wind outside and dry heat inside, twice a day, all winter. That is why your face feels tight by Tuesday and stings when you put anything on it.

Retinol on a broken barrier does not smooth lines, it just burns. For over 40 I would definitely use retinol. I would fix the barrier first, then start it, twice a week, at night. Same bottle, same money, different order.

Where I would start: Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence 120ml, €14.20, and Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Soothing Cream 75ml, €13.29. If your skin is very reactive, Avène Tolerance Control Recovery Cream 40ml, €21.90, instead of the Skin1004. Free delivery over €35.
