Soul Form Furniture Studio Furiture with a story

One man’s obstacle. Another man’s treasure.

This is Irish bog oak.

The land was cleared around 20 years ago, and this ancient timber has been sitting in a ditch ever since, getting in the way of farming.

Today, we’re giving it a new beginning.

We’ll bring it back to Soul Form Furniture Studio, store it under cover and allow it to air-dry slowly over the next few years.

Then we’ll see what lies within.

Something that spent thousands of years preserved in the ground, 20 years forgotten in a ditch, might one day become a piece of furniture that lasts for generations.

Some stories are worth waiting for.

Remember that spalted beech we showed you?

This time, we wanted to see what was actually happening inside it.

We made more than 200 cuts through the timber, photographing every layer as we went.

What you’re seeing isn’t an animation.

You’re actually travelling through the tree — watching the black fungal zone lines shift, split, disappear and reappear from one layer to the next.

Almost like a CT scan of a tree.

The more we work with this material, the more fascinating it gets.

What do you see in the patterns?

Everything is temporary.

The good moments will change, so enjoy them while they are here.

The difficult moments will change too, so do not let them convince you that they will last forever.

Life is always moving. Trust the process.

Thousands of years ago, this was part of an Irish forest.

The oak itself hasn’t changed. What changed was what happened to it.

Buried beneath peat for thousands of years, the timber slowly absorbed minerals from the ground, transforming the familiar pale colour of oak into something almost black.

When we uncover a piece of bog oak, we’re not just finding timber.

We’re finding a surviving piece of an ancient Irish landscape.

And then we get to give it another chapter.

We’re tattooing the story of Soul Form onto the walls of our workshop.

Our studio is an industrial space. No windows, no views out to nature — so we wanted to find another way to surround ourselves with creativity and inspiration.

Heather has kindly been coming into the workshop while I work. We chat, she listens, and somehow pieces of those conversations — the people, places, furniture and moments that have shaped Soul Form — find their way into her artwork.

Someone described it like tattoos: little pieces that represent important parts of your journey.

That’s exactly what we want these walls to become.

Eventually, we’d love every panel of the workshop to carry a piece of the Soul Form story.

And as our story grows, so will the walls.

A huge thank you to Heather for helping us tell it in her own way. MadeInIreland Tipperary

What do you do with the pieces that are too good to throw away?

We keep them.

A few small timber offcuts became these simple phone holders — engraved and made as gifts for an organisation we wanted to say thank you to.

It also gave me an excuse to get out the Japanese chisels, which is always a good thing.

As the fella says… waste not, want not.

Because no two projects are the same, and neither should the approach be.

Different ideas. Different materials. Different challenges.

But always the same soul.

Everything is called “sustainable” these days. This is what it actually looks like for our furniture studio in rural Ireland.

This beech tree fell only a few kilometres from our studio. We’re transforming it into a beautiful spalted beech table that will eventually return to the very property where the tree once stood.

And the story doesn’t end with the table.

Four giant bags of clean beech shavings are now heading to our local Tidy Towns flower beds, where they’ll be used as mulch to suppress weeds and help make the town beautiful.

A fallen tree. A family table. And the rest returned to the earth.

Follow Soul Form to see this table completed—and eventually returned home.
