जन्म-मरण के बंधन से मुक्ति या मोक्ष को भारतीय दार्शनिक परंपरा में मानव जीवन का सर्वोच्च पुरुषार्थ माना गया है।इसी का चिंतन उपनिषदों का मुख्य विषय है।यह एक गुह्य ज्ञान है जो प्राचीन भारत के गुरुकुलों में तत्त्वज्ञानी गुरुओं द्वारा कुछ चुने हुए शिष्यों को दिया जाता था।”उपनिषद्” शब्द का अर्थ भी यही है अर्थात् वह ज्ञान जो शिष्य गुरु के समीप श्रद्धापूर्वक बैठ कर प्राप्त करता है।

मार्च २००३ में अपनी ग्वालियर यात्रा के दौरान हमें वहाँ के प्रसिद्ध क़िले में प्रतिदिन सायं होने वाले “ध्वनि एवं प्रकाश” कार्यक्रम को देखने का अवसर मिला जिसमें बताया गया कि लगभग डेढ़ हजार वर्ष पूर्व आज जहाँ पर क़िला स्थित है वहाँ पहाड़ी और घना जंगल हुआ करता था जिसके बीच में ग्वालिप ऋषि का आश्रम था।एक बार कछवाहा राजपूत वंश के राजा सूरजसेन शिकार खेलते हुए और भूख-प्यास से विह्वल अवस्था में उस आश्रम पर आये।ऋषि को देखकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया और पानी माँगा।ऋषि ने उनसे थोड़ा आगे बढ़ने को कहा।जैसे ही वे आगे बढ़े उनके समीप एक गुप्त जलस्रोत सहसा प्रकट हो गया।इस जल को पीते ही न केवल उनकी प्यास बुझ गई अपितु उनके शरीर का बहुत पुराना कुष्ठ रोग भी ठीक हो गया।ऋषि की आज्ञा से राजा ने उस पहाड़ी को चारदीवारी से घिरवा कर एक मनोरम जलकुंड का निर्माण कराया जो सूरजकुंड के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ।
