Bengal Weaves...
Begumpuri Sarees.

Tara, brings to you some exclusive authentic Begumpuri Sarees with some exquisite blouses.
Bengal has always been known as a center for fine cotton weaving, be it in the Roman empire Mosul (Iraq), where European traders are said to have first encountered the cloth. Although this view has the fabric named after the city where Europeans first encountered it (Mosul), the fabric is believed to have originated in Dhakeshwari in Bengal. Bengali muslin was traded throughout the Muslim world… from the Middle East to Southeast Asia…. and far…

Even today Bengal is famous for its weaving tradition…. many small towns and villages like Fulia, Baluchari, Begampur, Atpur are keeping this culture alive. Begampur is a small town famous for its saree weaving in Hooghly district, these sarees can be identified by their loosely woven, light-weight and translucent made and have contrasting borders in red, black, purple, orange etc. These are also emphasized by a serrated edge motif. Narrow borders are woven with designs of a variety of stripes and figured motifs using dyed cotton yarn on the weft.
Cotton sarees are locally known as ‘Matapar’ sarees, which means they have simple borders without any ornamentation and are woven with coarser cotton yarn. They come mainly in colored stripes and check patterns, with designs in the border.

About 2,000 enterprising weavers and 1,000 ancillary artisans are
beautifully hand-weaving this sarees for generations.

Recently these handspun sarees are facing stiff competition from machine made cheap fabrics and design. The replicas are visually endearing but lacks the comfort, elegance and grace of Bengal Handlooms.

In Bengal, the word “Madur” is generic for floor mats. Mats are an integral part of Bengal’s lifestyle.
Madur is the tradition and pride of Medinipur the origin of the craft dates back to Muslim period when “Masland” mats with fine cotton as weft were produced under royal patronage. Mats were collected as revenue during Jaigirdari system.
Madurkanthi is a rhizome-based plant found in the alluvial tracts of Medinipur. The sticks can be reaped for a period of 3-4 years once the rhizomes are sown. The painstaking work starts from the steps when the soft reeds and the cotton are arranged in a bamboo framed loom as weft and warp. The craftsman dye the Madur sticks with natural and vegetable dyes.
The popular designs on Masland mats are of flowers, honey comb (mouchak)., Rhomboidal (barfi) and cascading (Jharna)
Apart from making mats, the craftsmen also make products like bags, curtains, Yoga mats and table runner etc.
An exclusive and expensive handmade variety of Madur is called “Mataranchi” known for intricate artistic skills. The madur sticks are seasoned by soaking in water for 24 hours and then sheared by using needles and laid out to dry. It is made even finer by shearing with teeth during weaving. The sticks are occasionally dyed using natural color from leaves. Cotton and muslin thread are used as warp. The time taken to weave a Mataranchi varies from 2 weeks to about 3 months depending on fineness of the sticks and intricacy of the design.
