Mixing greens with yellows and blues from the palette is a better way to achieve the bright and dull shades of green. In just 3 layers, you start to feel the depth in the subject. Same thing for the black or shadow greys - mixing your own shadows gives the liberty to switch from one shade to another by just altering the proportions. Colour mixing and colour theory is not only is not only important for harmonious compositions but it also gives us the freedom to mix our own hues without depending on the wide range of store bought colours.

3-day watercolour workshop starts from 26th july! Comment below ‘portrait’ for more info.
Here are the colour recipes-
- Layer 1: For a skin tone orange, take 50% lemon yellow and 50% crimson lake with lots of water.
- Layer 2: For mid tones, create a dull orange with 40% crimson lake, 40% lemon yellow and 20% cerulean blue.
- Layer 3: For shadows, create a chocolate brown with more of the cerulean blue this time. 40% crimson, 40% cerulean and 20% lemon yellow.
- Layer 4: for neutral grey or black, mix all three colours in equal proportion but very little water.
It’s possible to create an entire spectrum of colours with just three primaries, keep experimenting with the ratios and you will be surprised to see such vibrant mixes and also the neutral mixes.

Painting glass is easier than you thought! You just have to use a neutral grey if there’s a white background. Or use the shapes and colour from background to create the transparent effect. Only tricky part is to maintain the bright white highlights! In glossy textures, highlights need to be sharp and should be complimented with shadows around. Did you know- even the cast shadows of transparent objects have highlights? Keep observing these details to paint better!

When you compare gold to brass or copper, it usually has more bright yellow and orange undertones. The special thing with metals is also their ability to reflect the surrounding colours - if there are more vibrant colours around, the metal will automatically reflect those and the undertones will change. Let us know which texture should we cover next?

Steel may look like a simple grey but it becomes more interesting and realistic if you skip the greys and blacks from your palette and mix them with cool colours and burnt sienna!

Few more tips to paint metallic textures-
-The highlights need to be bright white specially if it’s glossy surface with mirror like finish.
-The brighter the highlights, darker the shadows- this is what will create the metal effect.
-Usually for mirror like textures, objects reflect the colours of objects around them. So, observe and adjust the colours accordingly.
