At the LAKSH FOUNDATION, we want every child in Mangar village to have access to free, good-quality education. LAKSH SCHOOL currently has o
ne hundred and twenty enrolled students, and this number increases every day. Approximately fifty children are brought to school each day by the Laksh tractor, and the remainder walk from Mangar Village or the neighbouring village of Silakdi. The school is housed in a newly constructed building at Laksh Farms, with four classrooms, a library & computer room, a kitchen and two rooms for our caretakers. We are currently seriously under-funded and depend on our incredible volunteer support teams, who have contributed valuable time and energy to help give LAKSH SCHOOL the formal structure it so desperately needs. We also have an amazing team of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers from Mangar Village, most of whom are students themselves, and who have been vital to the daily administration of our school. THE WOMEN’S CENTRE at Laksh Farms took shape as an initiative to help get the village women out of the stone-crushing quarries where they worked, and into an environment that allowed them to gain and develop sewing and embroidery skills and generate an additional source of income for their families. We produce everything from hand-embroidered bedspreads and quilts to cushion covers, kurtas, dresses and intricately worked boho skirts. The women at the centre currently number between 50 and 60, and what began as a training centre has evolved into a microfinance project where we provide them with sewing machines which they buy from us for low monthly installments.
