Who says jewelry is just for women? ๐Ÿ–ค

Somewhere in history, men wore jewelry as a symbol of power. As an identity. As art. And then โ€” quietly โ€” we were told not to.

Well thankfully, ๐—ก๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ didnโ€™t get that memo. ๐Ÿ‘

At ๐—ค๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฏ โ€” his intimate evening series under in Mumbai โ€” Nitin took the stage wearing one of our handcrafted neckpieces โ€” and just like that, reminded every single person in that room what ethnic jewelry was always meant to be.

When his world of words met our world of handcraft โ€” something beautiful was said without saying anything at all.

One saree is 30 years old, a timeless silk drape from my mother-in-lawโ€™s wardrobe. The other is my tissue cotton saree from โ€” soft, feather-light, and handwoven with care. ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒˆ

Different textures. Different eras. But both speak the same language โ€” of tradition, craftsmanship, and love passed down through generations.

At this yearโ€™s Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Gurfat: The Entanglement by Madhura Nayak struck a powerful chord.

At first glance, the rearing horse exudes strength and grace, its front half symbolizing hope and transformation. But move around, and the reality shiftsโ€”the rear half is trapped in a chaotic mass of discarded fabric, exposing the hidden toll of textile waste and overconsumption.

The fashion industry generates millions of tons of waste yearly, much of it non-biodegradable. From fabric scraps and unsold stock to discarded fast fashion, the environmental burden is staggering. The installationโ€™s backdropโ€”a towering pile of textile wasteโ€”mirrors the destruction we often ignore.

Yet, Gurfat offers a message of resilience. The horse pushes forward, reminding us that change is possible. Through mindful consumption, ethical fashion, and responsible production, we can shift from wastefulness to sustainability.

At Woven Poetry, sustainability is at our core. We work with artisans across India, preserving handwoven, naturally dyed, and handcrafted textiles. Our fabricsโ€”Ajrakh, Bagru, Kalamkari, Ikat, and moreโ€”honor tradition while championing conscious fashion.

This installation is a call to action: Buy less, choose well, and make it last. Fashion should tell a storyโ€”one that values people, craftsmanship, and the planet.
