Beyond the Loom: Sujatam at National Handloom Day

This National Handloom Day, Sujatam joined a distinguished panel hosted by The Times of India to speak about a subject that has shaped our journey from the very beginning: how heritage can move forward without losing its truth.

The conversation went beyond nostalgia. We spoke about the weaver and the market, authenticity and aspiration, live commerce and technology—and how digital platforms can bring the story of a loom directly into people’s homes.

For Sujatam, this was more than an event. It was an opportunity to place before a larger audience what we have learned through years of working with Banaras, its weavers and thousands of handloom patrons.

Here are a few moments from a meaningful evening.

Coming next: the people who made the conversation memorable, followed by Somenath Mukherjee’s complete address.

Handloom is not nostalgia.
It is the future we chose to weave! fans

On 28 August 2020, when marketplaces had fallen silent, Banaras came home through a screen.

Sujatam went live—not from a polished studio, but with real sarees, real stories and an honest conversation between the loom and the customer. What began as a response to uncertainty gradually became a new marketplace. Customers discovered the intelligence behind a weave, artisans found continuity through fresh demand, and live commerce went on to create crores of rupees in business around handwoven Banarasis.

Not because heritage was made fashionable—but because it was made visible, understandable and trustworthy.

From the lanes of Banaras and our live shows beside the Ganga to the Sujatam atelier in Kolkata, the journey has always carried one belief: handloom cannot survive merely as something we admire. It must remain desirable, economically meaningful and relevant to the way people live today.

This National Handloom Day, we celebrate every hand that creates—and every person who chooses to keep that hand in motion.

Handloom is not our past.
It is our future.

I have never believed that Indian luxury must always arrive in red.

Sometimes, it arrives in a deep, uncompromising green.

I chose to wear this saree myself because certain pieces cannot be understood merely by displaying them. One must see how they move, how the antique gold catches the light, and how quietly the entire look begins to command a room.

This is my idea of Indian evening luxury—rooted in our tradition, yet completely at ease anywhere in the world.

It does not depend upon excess.
It does not ask to be noticed.
It carries its own presence.

For the woman who does the same.

When Paithani meets Banaras…

The saree is a peacock-blue Paithani, framed in unapologetic Rani pink. But I did not want to pair it with an expected blouse.

So I brought in Banaras.

The blouse is crafted in pure Banarasi silk, woven in Jangla and finished with delicate Jardausi highlights. Two distinct textile traditions—Paithani and Banarasi—brought together not to compete, but to complete the look.

That, for me, is the pleasure of styling handloom: respecting where each textile comes from, while discovering where else it can travel.

Would you keep a Paithani traditional—or pair it with Banarasi like this?
