Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a common plant known for its soft, fuzzy leaves and tall yellow flower spikes. You’ll often spot it growing wild in disturbed areas like roadsides.
Traditionally, people have used its leaves and flowers to make teas or oils. These are often used to help soothe coughs and chest congestion.
🌿 Mullein’s Growth Cycle:
First Year: It grows a flat circle of thick, soft, woolly leaves (sometimes called “grandmother’s flannel”). This is year one – not time to harvest yet, just to appreciate its beauty and many wonders!
Second Year: It shoots up a tall stalk (2 to 7 feet high) with tiny yellow flowers at the top. This is the time to harvest before this amazing herb drops its seeds and dies.
Some teas, like “Breath Easy,” blend mullein with other herbs such as eucalyptus, peppermint, fennel seed, licorice, ginger, cinnamon, and orange peel. “Breath Easy tea” is believed to help open up your lungs, clear out congestion, and generally make you feel better.
