First in our series of , is Indra - the Guardian deity of the cardinal point East, is the most important God in the religion. He is the God of thunder and storms. Indra is frequently portrayed wielding a thunderbolt (vajra) but he may also carry the chakra (discus), an ankusha (elephant goad) and the tanka (axe). He is often shown riding his white elephant Airāvata who was born from the churning of the seas when the world was created. He is also flanked by his wife Shachi in some sculptures.
