What is the history of Vidarbha in Maharashtra?
In the year 1853, the British government had created the Central Provinces and Berar, with Nagpur as its capital.
The new province included parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
The name was changed to Madhya Pradesh in 1956. In 1960, when Bombay State was partitioned on linguistic lines, Vidarbha became part of Maharashtra.
The Vidarbha region of Maharashtra is a fertile region, which has been the hub of cultural activity for centuries.
The history of Vidarbha starts from prehistoric times when it was inhabited by hunter-gatherer communities.
These communities were largely nomadic and used to stay in different parts of the region depending on availability of food and water.
In ancient times, there were three major kingdoms in this region: the kingdom of Nagpur, Berar and Gondwana.
These kingdoms were ruled by different dynasties such as the Chandelas, Chalukyas and Satavahanas respectively. The most notable ruler was Raghuji Bhonsle I who founded Nagpur city in 1674 AD. He also built the famous Chittorgarh fort in Rajnand.
Vidarbha is a region in the eastern part of Maharashtra state.
It was carved out of the Marathwada region in 1960.
The people of Vidarbha have a unique culture that is distinct from other regions in Maharashtra.
They speak Marathi and their dialect, which is different from the standard dialect of Marathi.
They also have their own traditional attire and food. Their cultural identity is so strong that they have formed their own political party, the Vidarbha Lok Samiti, and they are fighting for their rights to be recognized as a separate state.
