_ “ Kai, your s**t is as real as dirt it might be dirty, but it also gives life.” - Red

There’s a humble power about Kai Alcé (pronounced al-SAY). Haitian parents, a childhood spent between St. Croix and New York, a teenage move to Detroit that put him at the center of the city right as techno was taking shape & the birth of legendary club The Music Institute.
From there he moved to Atlanta for college and ended up relocating, carrying everything he’d absorbed from New York & Detroit into a city that had barely any house scene to speak of.

When the DJs who’d been holding it down in Atlanta left town around 1991, Kai didn’t hesitate. “I just felt like if I didn’t step in, there wasn’t anyone concentrating on playing house music,” he says. And the rest is history.

He went on to run DEEP, a decade-long residency at MJQ that brought Detroit heavyweights like Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Mike Huckaby, Chez Damier & Ron Trent down south , cementing in no small way Atlanta’s own distinct sound.

In 2005 he co-founded House In The Park (HITP) with Ramon Rawsoul. What started as a small outdoor party has grown into a Labor Day institution drawing massive crowds to Atlanta’s Grant Park every year and DJ / producer Ash Lauryn has called it the thing that “got me truly back into house music.”

Kai’s own label NDATL, the initials of New York, Detroit and Atlanta, the three cities that raised him is without doubt considered an institution among deep house heads and diggers worldwide, home to artists like Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Mr. G, Mike Huckaby and more, alongside Kai’s own productions.

He also started Deep Detroit, an annual Movement-weekend party born as a reunion for old Music Institute heads, now grown into an institution of its own, complete with a vinyl-only release you can only get if you’re actually in the room.
Over two decades in, he’s DJing for DJing’s sake, pushing himself and everyone in the room right along with him.
It’s the whole philosophy, really: Life is good after a session.

“Sick, sick, sick.” - Theo Parrish.
“ Ridiculous.” - D**o.

Born in Newark, raised in Chicago when the city was still a living laboratory for house, disco and late-night radio experimentation, Sadar Bahar absorbed music as culture before it was industry. Long before international flights and global bookings, there were radio tapes, record stores, basement parties, and an obsession with understanding why certain grooves hit deeper than others.

His education came from dance floors, from the raw energy of early Chicago, from DJs who played with fearless abandon, from a time when the booth wasn’t a stage but a command center. That foundation built a simple but uncompromising philosophy: music must move the body before it feeds the ego.

A relentless digger and lifelong vinyl collector, Sadar treats record hunting as daily practice. He doesn’t chase rarity for status; he searches for tension, soul, rhythm, and emotional weight. His sets glide through obscure disco, early house, leftfield soul and raw electronics without ever sounding nostalgic.

His long-running party Soul In The Hole, co-founded with Lee Collins who we lost too soon, reflects that same ethos: a space where music is physical, communal and uncompromised. For Sadar “ The dance floor comes first!”

Technology has evolved. Club culture has shifted. His core hasn’t. Playing vinyl is the format that mirrors Sadar’s approach: tactile, imperfect, alive. For Sadar, the DJ is a conduit controlling energy in real time, not a performer chasing attention.

What am I “trying” to do with these posts?
Well, I don’t really know. I’m probably trying to figure it out, fishing here and there to see if what I’m thinking is something others are thinking too.
I definitely have more questions than answers, that’s for sure.

Many of us have been in this industry for several decades, witnessing changes, shifts and challenges along the way.
And one of the many questions I keep asking myself is: are we playing the game, or is it the game playing us?

IS THIS REALLY HOW IT’S SUPPOSED TO WORK?
I’m talking from the field I work in, but it feels like in many other fields where a similar approach still exists, things are pretty much the same.
For businesses like mine, even if we operate in the same field as big companies, many of us work in a very hands-on, bespoke way.

Partly by choice, partly can’t carry the costs of a big team.
We believe in personal relationships, knowing

who we work with, taking care of the details and creating something rather than simply processing it.
But can this approach still work within the way the industry is developing?

DOES “QUALITY” STILL PAY THE BILLS?

High - end services, personal relationships, experience, knowledge, time and attention.
More and more of what we do can be automated, scaled and made faster.
And yet we keep talking about the value of the human factor.
are we actually willing to pay for it?
Because human work takes time.
And time has a cost.

WHO GETS TO MATTER ? AND FOR HOW LONG?
Sometimes you see artists who have been shaping and influencing our scene struggling to get the recognition or opportunities they deserve. What is the reason behind it?

SO WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT?
For independent businesses, the expectations keep growing.
So how do we keep choosing quality over quantity and still make a living?
Maybe we need to stop worrying about followers and start creating space for participants.
This is not a show to watch.
Don’t wait to be seated.
This is a show to create from scratch.
Before it turns into a s**t show for all of us.

I’ve had this idea in my mind for a while and last Saturday, I decided to finally put it out there.
What if, instead of all trying to survive on our own, independent businesses, artists, promoters, labels, platforms and people working around music started joining forces?
I didn’t know what to expect.

But seeing how many people connected with the idea, I realised that maybe it’s not such a bad idea.
The conversations that followed have been incredibly encouraging, but also honest.
The what, the who, the when, the how loads of questions, not many answers yet.
It ain’t easy. But it’s not impossible. And definitely exciting.
I’m not sure what the first step will be yet. Exploring, talking, asking for advice that’s what is happening right now.
This is still food for thought. A natural consequence of trying things, failing, stopping, starting again. We start, we fail, we stop, we start again.
What matters is that I’m going to keep this conversation going, without an expiry date.
So, if any of this resonates with you, don’t just scroll past it. Stop, think and participate.
Ideas, intuitions, questions, proposals, connections , whatever comes to mind.
I don’t know where this might take us.
But at least, it’s not a bad idea.

Over the past few months, I’ve been thinking a lot about how independent businesses can keep evolving.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised that strong networks make stronger businesses.

At Sounds Familiar, we’re actively exploring new partnerships, ideas and collaborative projects.

If you’ve been thinking along similar lines

we’d love to hear from you.

Ready we ready.

Tim Sweeney joins Sounds Familiar’s Artist Roster ✌️

Tim Sweeney has spent three decades behind the decks, building a reputation as someone who can read a room, knowing the exact moment a night is ready to tip into something bigger. He came up inside DFA’s New York in the early 2000s, crossing paths with James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy as the label took shape and playing the parties that defined the era. That connection put him on the road as DFA’s ambassador, playing parties like PS1’s celebrated Warm Up series and touring alongside the label’s roster as it rewired how New York danced. That’s still the throughline today: sets that move freely across house, disco, techno, italo, and balearic, built for the floor rather than for any one genre.
His catalogue of bookings reads like a map of the clubs that matter, including a milestone set marking 25 years of Robert Johnson, the Offenbach institution that has hosted him repeatedly over the years. Add stops at Panorama Bar, Sub Club, Nitsa and beyond, and Sweeney has speent over thirty years proving he’s as comfortable closing out a marathon night as he is opening one.
His radio show, Beats In Space, now in its twenty-seventh year and currently airing on Apple Music Club, runs alongside the DJing rather than apart from it: an hour of his own selections, an exclusive guest mix, and an interview, every week.
It’s the same ear in both rooms, touring the world and bringing the world back through his studio, surfacing records the rest of us would have missed.
