It’s been so busy that I have left these kintsugi pieces to cure for 3 months! Fun trimming hardened mugi and cleaning sticky melted cellophane tapes.

After some muscle work, sparkling clean again.

3 months is enough to turn any kintsugi repair into a sticky situation.

It’s slow but it’s getting there. Kintsugi is such a slow craft. The urushi painting part is so slow that even when speed up 4X, it looks like it’s normal human speed. 😂

Can you see the hidden cost of kintsugi?

Most people see the gold.

Few see the dirty hands and the forests behind the repair.

A tree grows for 10 years to give only a small cup of lacquer.

Behind every repaired piece is a forester, an artisan, and a decade of patience.

Urushi is very precious. So we save every drop and every little bit of mixed fillers. wrap leftover sabi or kokusou in multiple layers of plastic wrap. Keep them in room temperature or in the fridge. use them within a few days. The smaller the bits the faster it tends to harden or lose its effectiveness.

I always tell my students OCD is a prerequisite when learning kintsugi and lacquer craft. And it pretty much applies to all Japanese crafts. Without that, skills won’t elevate. The word “kougei” in Japan embedded so much more than the word “craft” in other parts of the world. And the word “obsession” could be translated to “zenshin zenrei” in Japanese. Dedication is a given, an entry point. Obsession is the requirement.

I always start the day the same way: a warm melon-pan and black coffee.

Before that, pieces are set out the night before.
It gives motivation.

After the caffeine hits, I go straight in.

By the end of the day,
one melon-pan 🥯 somehow lasted the whole day,
and the bigger pieces are still waiting.

That’s fine. Kintsugi doesn’t rush.
There’s always tomorrow.
