夏の窯元便り__(萬古焼の歴史)
梅雨明けから酷暑が続き、窯元では厳しい日が続いております。
先々月は近所の小学校から多くの子供たちが社会見学に来てくれました。
今までにも子供たちが夏休みの体験や自由研究で、萬古焼を取り上げてくれる事が多々ありました。
とりわけ、子供たちには四日市萬古焼の歴史をしっかりお伝えすることを心掛けております。
四日市萬古の始まりは、四日市市末永の大地主で村役であった山中忠左衛門という人が、萬古焼の人気に注目し、四日市の地場産業として窯業を興したいと、嘉永6年（1853）に邸内に窯を築きました。
忠左衛門は慈善家として知られ、萬古焼の開窯の理由も水害による地区困民の救済にありました。
そのため、人々に呼びかけ、道具と陶土を与えて指導し、苦労して会得した陶法を一般に公開し、明治6年（1873）には量産体制と確立しました。
萬古焼は人々の救済の道具として広まったと考えると、私たち萬古焼職人は胸が熱くなる想いです。
是非、子供たちにもこのような歴史や人を知ってもらい、世の中へ羽ばたいていってもらいたいものです。

Summer Kiln News (History of Banko Ware)
Since the end of the rainy season, the intense heat has continued, making for challenging days at the kiln.
Two months ago, many children from a nearby elementary school came for a field trip.
In the past, children have often chosen Banko ware as a subject for their summer vacation experiences and independent research projects.
Among these projects, we have shared the history of Yokkaichi Banko ware.
The origins of Yokkaichi Banko ware lie with Yamanaka Chūzaemon, a wealthy landowner and village official in Suenaga, Yokkaichi City. Noticing the popularity of Banko ware, he wanted to establish a pottery industry as a local industry in Yokkaichi, and built a kiln on his property in 1853 (Kaei 6).
Chūzaemon was known as a philanthropist, and the reason for establishing the Banko ware kiln was to provide relief to the residents of the area who had been affected by floods.
Therefore, he appealed to people, provided them with tools and clay, instructed them, and made the pottery techniques he had painstakingly mastered public. By 1873 (Meiji 6), a mass production system had been established.
Thinking that Banko ware spread as a tool for the relief of people fills us Banko ware craftsmen with deep emotion.
