A birth certificate is the very first document your child gets. It defines their identity for the rest of their lives.
Here are a few things to know about getting a birth certificate.
1. When you have your baby, a birth notification is filled at the hospital. One copy remains at the hospital, one is sent to the government and one you go with. This notification dictates the record of your child. The information you give goes to the birth certificate. You don't have to fill immediately, give yourself time to think. Including the father's name translates to it being on the birth certificate.
2. You can change your child's name any time between birth and two years. Beyond that, they name stays.
3. It's very easy to add a name on the birth certificate. Removing a name is a game of cat and mouse. You will cry.
4. Adding father's name is easy, removing it, a whole other process that involves lawyers and courts.
5. When you use someone to get you a birth certificate, ensure they get you a legit document with the correct details. Otherwise, it's something you can do yourself.
6. Keep your birth certificate safe. You don't need to laminate it, in fact, you shouldn't. Also, have scanned copies kept somewhere, they come in handy in case you lose your document.
