So, last Friday, a guy called me asking if I could confirm whether a shop he had found online actually existed. I agreed — at a small fee.

When he heard the charge, he said it was too much. I stood my ground because I wasn’t selling air — I was selling my time, experience, and protection from loss.
What is more expensive than time?

He decided to look for an alternative.

Yesterday, Sunday, he messaged me again — he had lost KSh 30,000.
The deal was for a TV along Luthuli Avenue. The shop didn’t exist.
He was now 30k negative, all because he didn’t want to pay 1k to confirm.

Here’s the lesson:
Don’t look at the face value of the fee.
Look at the bigger picture — convenience + risk avoidance.

If you’re far and you’ve found a “good deal”, confirm first before paying.

I find it quite disturbing what happens daily at Marikiti market.

Someone buys foodstuffs worth thousands, hires a kua, then wants to pay 100–300 bob to carry heavy loads from Marikiti to OTC or across town. When the kua asks for fair pay, complaints start.

Some of these loads cannot even be carried on the back — you need a trolley or cart (which costs money). Others promise “ni 30 minutes” only for you to roam the market together for 3 hours, and when you ask for a top-up because time is gone, the response is a flat NO.

Even more disturbing: someone pays 50 bob to carry half a sack of potatoes… then later complains when the kua disappears with the goods.
I’m not justifying theft — there are very many honest kuas in Marikiti — but let’s be honest: exploitative pay breeds problems.

This work is physically demanding. These guys hustle hard for daily bread.
As buyers, let’s be human. Pay what the effort deserves.
