This weekend, Siem Reap celebrates Drawn To The Wild Art Festival .drawntothewild . Here’s one of my favourite artworks, “Where The Wild Things Go”, featuring some of Cambodia’s endangered land animals.

My love for animals started very young, with trips to the zoo, shelves full of nature books, and childhood heroes like David Attenborough and Gerald Durrell. As a teenager, I spent many weekends exploring the mangroves near my home, watching migrating shorebirds.

So this artwork is more than just a collection of animals. It is a reflection on where we are heading — and a hope for a future where humans recognise that we are part of nature, not separate from it.

Every year, our neighbour gives our little alleyway a colourful makeover with their hanging umbrellas!

"If You Wish To Move Mountains, You Must Begin By Moving Stones" by Joshua Chiang.

This is the pencil sketch of my initial concept. While the elephant is a favourite subject in many paintings featuring the Angkor temples, they are seldom tied in a meaningful way to the monuments other than serving as scenery. In this artwork, I employed an ancient artistic technique known as the "hierarchy of scale" to communicates that the Angkor Empire was built on the back of the noble elephant. Without these animals to move the massive sandstones sourced from the Kulen Mountains, the construction of these monuments would have been a far more grueling task.

(Temples referenced from top to bottom: Ta Prohm, Bayon, Terrace of the Elephants, Banteay Srei, and Angkor Wat.)

"Life in Angkor: The Royal Parade" by Joshua Chiang.

This artwork is originally featured on water bottles produced by Baray for Life, a project that promotes eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics. Working with the theme of water, I planned a series of artworks depicting life in ancient Angkor, an empire intrinsically tied to its "hydraulic city" roots. Drawing heavily from temple bas-reliefs and struck by how much they resembled modern comics, I reimagine the scenes with a contemporary twist—a stylistic homage to Tintin creator Hergé. Here, a royal procession unfolds; in keeping with the slapstick energy of Hergé’s work, I depict a scene of two Cham soldiers cartoonishly fleeing from the scene rather than the grittier battles often seen in the original stone carvings.

“Dance Of The Blue Cats” by Joshua Chiang.

I painted this whimsical piece in acrylic earlier this year. Then we met a friend who was sewing cat pillows, and we thought… why not blue cat pillows?

They look pretty good on a sofa, but they could also be used as a neck pillow for long flights or a wrist pillow while typing.
