Your underarms should generally be the same color as the surrounding skin.

If they appear noticeably darker, that's a sign of underarm hyperpigmentation.

Skin hyperpigmentation is often post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

As the name suggests, repeated or ongoing inflammation triggers excess melanin production, causing the affected skin to gradually become darker.

Underarm hyperpigmentation is EXTREMELY COMMON.

THE WHY

1. Underarm Hair Removal

When your skin is repeatedly scraped or irritated, it develops tiny injuries that can eventually lead to discoloration.

Shaving with a razor creates countless microscopic cuts.

Because underarm skin is thin and delicate, repeated shaving can easily trigger inflammation that contributes to hyperpigmentation.

2. Irritating Ingredients in Deodorants

If your deodorant contains even one of the following ingredients, your risk of underarm hyperpigmentation increases dramatically:

-Aluminum

-Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

-Strong fragrances

-Hydroxides

-Denatured alcohol

Ever wondered why darkening gets worse even after switching to natural deodorants?

Because most natural deodorants contain one or few of the bottom four of the above list.

Pigmentation usually doesn't develop overnight.

It often starts with mild itching or redness. If the irritation continues, the skin can gradually become darker as pigmentation develops.

THE FIX

If you're already concerned about underarm hyperpigmentation—or simply want to prevent it—focus on these two things.

1. Reduce Physical Irritation

Avoid shaving whenever possible, or consider laser hair removal to minimize repeated skin trauma.

2. Eliminate Chemical Irritation

Choose a deodorant that is free from common irritating ingredients.

Look for formulas that do not contain:

Aluminum

Baking soda

Fragrance

Alcohol

Hydroxides

To my knowledge, FreshCult is currently the only deodorant that excludes all five of these major ingredients associated with irritation and potential hyperpigmentation.

Should I be rightfully happy with my creation?

Ironically, when I was developing FreshCult, I was not ever thinking about brightened underarms.

My focus and objective was simply to develop a deodorant that provided greatl odor protection while being extremely gentle on super sensitive skin.

But soon, many customers began reporting an unexpected benefit.

"It has been only a week, and my armpits are already brighter!"

Because irritation from deodorants is one of the major contributors to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, many users noticed visible brightening after switching from conventional deodorants to FreshCult.

And that's how I learned about this side benefit of FreshCult.
