🌍💎 The World's Most Valuable Postage Stamp – The British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta 📮
Did you know that a tiny postage stamp, originally worth just 1 cent, became the most expensive stamp ever sold?
The legendary British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta, issued in 1856, is often called the "Mona Lisa of Philately." It is the only known surviving example in the world, making it one of the greatest treasures in philatelic history.
📜 A Stamp Born from an Emergency
In 1856, the British colony of British Guiana (now Guyana) faced a shortage of postage stamps when a shipment from England failed to arrive on time. To keep the postal service running, the local postmaster authorized the Royal Gazette newspaper to print temporary emergency stamps.
The 1 Cent Magenta was printed in black ink on magenta-colored paper and each stamp was initialled by a postal clerk to help prevent forgery.
👦 The Incredible Discovery
In 1873, a 12-year-old Scottish schoolboy, Louis Vernon Vaughan, found the stamp among old family papers in British Guiana. Unaware of its future significance, he sold it for only six shillings to a local stamp collector.
That simple discovery would become one of the greatest stories in the history of stamp collecting.
💰 A World Record
Over the following decades, the stamp passed through the collections of some of the world's most famous philatelists.
In June 2021, it was sold at Sotheby's in New York for an incredible US$8.3 million, making it the most expensive postage stamp ever sold at auction.
