Today we say goodbye to two of our interns, and ! For the past 3 months, Ella and Shriver have been fully immersed in life at the Bimini Shark Lab - helping out with 6 visiting school courses, a month of Florida Keys research, numerous boat trips, shark dives, lab tours, and more!

A huge thank you to Ella and Shriver for all your hard work, passion, and good vibes, it has been amazing having you here!

Two of our crew members, Tim and Issy, just got back from an exciting trip working with and Dean Grubbs on a deep-sea research cruise in the Gulf of Mexico! They spent 12 days at sea in rolling seas, rough weather, and with little sleep setting deep-water long lines to assess the long term effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.

Over the course of 12 days we sampled some deep sea species very rarely seen and we were able to:

- Sample depths 200-1,808 meters
- Catch 206 fishes including 92 elasmobranchs from 11 species, 100 teleosts from 19 species, 14 hagfish from one species, and 152 invertebrates from 15 taxa.
- Collect 849 fish samples
- Satellite tag two adult night sharks (Carcharhinus signatus)

The crew were all incredible, a huge thank you to the science team at for having us, we had a truly amazing time!

Our team had a wonderful time at REEF this year at their annual Florida Keys Lionfish derby and arts festival!

We had a great time chatting to everyone who stopped by our booth to talk sharks, ocean conservation, and the work we do at the lab. We loved sharing our passion, meeting so many curious people of all ages, and connecting with so many who care about protecting our oceans as much as we do! Thank you for having us, already looking forward to the next one!

University of Nebraska 2026!!

It’s been an incredible week hosting the University of Nebraska at the lab! Between great conditions and some good luck, we had some unforgettable encounters on the water, including Bull sharks, Lemon sharks, a Tiger shark, and even a manta ray, just to name a few! Slide through to see highlights of the week!

Such an enthusiastic and fun group, and an absolute pleasure to have with us. Thank you to .lamp.lab and it was wonderful having you at the lab again! We can’t wait to welcome Nebraska back again soon!

Join us for our Early Career workshops!!!

Session 1: December 5-11 2026
Session 2: February 3-9 2027

Our December session will focus on Movement Ecology and will be led by Dr. Nigel Hussey & Dr. Matt Smukall

Our February session will focus on Conservation Policy and will be led by Dr. Mark Bond & Dr. Matt Smukall

This is a great experience to network with other early career scientists from many different countries along with workshops led by highly knowledgeable instructors.

Share your mangrove photos!!

The are into the final days for submitting photos where you can share your photos and stories about mangroves and their inhabitants all in efforts to bring awareness and conservation so these important ecosystems!

Entry is free, there’s $7,000 worth of prizes up for grabs and categories are as follows:

Wildlife, People, Landscape, Threats, Underwater and a portfolio Conservation Stories. Photographers under the age of 24 will automatically enter the Young Mangrove Photographer of the Year.

Entries close 1st June.

April Research Recap!

This past April we spent the entire month in the Florida Keys continuing our projects and providing the opportunity for our interns to gain hands on field experience. These trips are also very weather dependent so when we were unable to go on the water we are able to get caught up on data entry and analysis.

During our month we tagged and released 117 sharks from 8 different species! Of these sharks we were able to deploy 10 acoustic tags and 5 Satellite tags!

During these trips we also retrieve and redeploy our acoustic receivers. We download the detection data so we are able to understand how sharks and fish utilize this area. Our acoustic receivers contribute to a larger collaborative network

We were also joined by our friends from to support some of their labs ongoing projects.

Sharks International 2026!

We had such an amazing time attending .international in Sri Lanka. Reconnecting with Shark Lab alumni and making new friends from around the globe. There were so many great talks and posters. It was very cool to see everyone’s projects from around the world! After the conference our team had a wonderful time attending a few workshops to take back and share with the rest of the crew.

A huge Thank You to for such an amazing conference!

This Earth Day we want to highlight the beauty and importance Mangroves and their inhabitants!

Whether it is a bird hunting baitfish or a juvenile Lemon Shark seeking refuge from predators. Mangroves are connected to all living things in Bimini. During a storm within the stilt roots of a Red mangrove there is a sense of tranquility because the small organisms such as crustaceans and nudibranchs are confident in their homes strength. Even at night a mangrove is teeming with life with the endemic Bimini Boa in the branches above and Lemon sharks swimming below.

Mangroves play a vital role on small islands such as Bimini. Creating a nursery habitat for not only Turtles, Fish, and Elasmobranchs, but for economically important organisms such as Lobster and Conch. Without these mangroves there will be an increased vulnerability to storms along with a significant decrease in local biodiversity.

Baby Back Rub!

This Juvenile Lemon Shark (Negaprion brevirostris) scratches its back on the sand. This is a relatively common behavior in juvenile sharks. They do this in efforts to clean off parasites or a pesky sharksucker.
