In Mexico, we don't decorate for our dead. We set the table for them.

Every year on November 1 and 2, families build an ofrenda to welcome back the people they love. Each element has a purpose: marigolds guide the way home, water refreshes after a long journey, candles light the path, and their favorite food and photograph remind them the space was made just for them.

And there's always a calavera. In Mexico, death isn't something to hide. We give it a smile and a place at the table.

These calaveras carry a second tradition: Wixárika (Huichol) beadwork. Tiny glass beads are pressed one by one into beeswax by hand. Many artists work without any sketch, creating the design as they go.

“When something is really cheap, someone’s paying for it.”

Price tells us what something costs us. It doesn’t always tell us what it cost to make.

Behind every product is a chain of decisions: who made it, how they were compensated, what materials were used, how quickly it needed to be produced, and whether the people behind it have the opportunity to keep doing their work.

That’s one reason we believe so deeply in handmade.

When we work consistently with artisans, the goal isn’t simply to create beautiful products. It’s to create ongoing opportunities around the skills and traditions that made those products possible in the first place.

We don’t expect anyone to shop perfectly.

But we do believe in shopping more curiously.

Who made it? How was it made? And what does my purchase help make possible?

Those questions can change the way we see a price tag.
