THE GIG THEY DIDN’T WANT YOU TO REMEMBER

Kajang-Cheras, 1972: Malaysia’s Lost Woodstock.

Back in the mid-1990s, I started hearing rumours. Not the kind you read in books or newspapers, but the kind that travel by word of mouth, whispered over kopi, guitar strings, and late night conversations.

The story? That the Kajang-Cheras grounds were once home to a wild, all night, Woodstock-style music gathering in 1972. Some said it was Malaysia’s first. Some said it was the last. Nobody seemed 100% sure.

So I did what most people would do...kept it quiet and went on with my life.

Then came the early 2000s.
That’s when luck struck.

I crossed path with an old-school guitarist from Kajang...a full-on Jimmy Page die-hard who played regularly at a lounge/bar called BISIK. Over drinks and distortion, we talked about the old days. About Kajang before malls and flyovers. About the time when Pasar Besar Kajang was still alive and kicking, and music felt dangerous in the best way possible. And right when the night felt like it was winding down, the conversation took a sharp turn.

“So… that Woodstock thing in Kajang bro,” I said.
“Was it real?”
Silence.
No reaction.
No denial.
No laughter.

Just a pause.

Then I told him straight, I am not looking for gossip or glory. I just wanted to know. For the love of music. That’s when he opened up. Not the whole story, but enough to confirm what many had only dared to believe...it really happened. A long, loud, messy, beautiful music gathering. Right here. Kajang-Cheras. 1972.

WHAT WENT DOWN (AS FAR AS I CAN TELL)

- Year: 1972
- Location: Tapak / Kem Pengakap, Balakong (Kajang–Cheras grounds).
- Duration: Anywhere between 24 to 30 hours non-stop.
- Theme: Music for Peace
- Vibe: Counterculture. Long hair. Loud amps. No sponsors. No rules.
- Status: An oral-history legend. Malaysia’s closest brush with Woodstock.

No fancy stage.
No strict lineup.
No social media.

Just youth, music, and freedom, running on borrowed amps and shared dreams.

THE BAND THAT KEEPS COMING UP

One name refuses to disappear, no matter who you talk to...

Son of Adam
Repeatedly mentioned across independent oral accounts. If there’s one solid anchor in this whole story, this is it.

OTHER NAMES FROM THE UNDERGROUND (REPORTED, NOT CONFIRMED)

These bands and names keep surfacing in musician circles, collector chats, and underground interviews. Treat these as reported performers, not confirmed facts.

- Sweet September
- The Falcons
- Mushroom Alice
- Ash Wednesday
- Illusion Revival
- Blues Gang (Early Malaysian blues-rock pioneers, often linked to peace-gig circuits of the early ’70s).
- Sweet Charity (possible cross-border presence) Singapore bands were known to cross into the Klang Valley scene back then.
- The Strollers (possible members or offshoots)
- The Swallows (rumoured attendance).

Some may have played full sets.
Some may have jammed for 20 minutes.
Some may have just been there watching history happen.

THE DIRTY TRUTH

This was not a modern festival.
No running order.
No soundcheck schedules.
No barricades.
What likely happened:
Musicians rotated on and off
Amps and instruments were shared
Jam sessions broke out at random
Anyone brave enough could climb on stage.

That chaos?
That’s the point brother. 🙂

WHY THIS MATTERS

This wasn’t just a gig.

It was a moment when Malaysian youth briefly synced with a global counterculture before things tightened up, before stories went quiet, before history slipped through the cracks.

Now, I got half the puzzle in my hands and I am chasing the rest. Photos. Names. Memories. Logbooks. The stuff that proves this wasn’t just a myth.

This writings is for the kids who never knew.
This is for the musicians who were there.

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC. Peace!

P/S: Big thanks to everyone who shared photos and info with me. I’ll try to publish a few personal photos from that glorious day, including shots showing how the crowd had to make their way through the jungle, dirt paths, and even by bicycle just to reach Kem Semangat on that sunny day. 😉✌🏼

Dengan event aku & event anak aku, dua2 pun aku bedal.

Tapi syukur Alhamdulillah, along the way tu aku banyak jumpa kawan2 lama & kawan2 baru yang datang singgah ke hobby shop aku. Walaupun join event2 ni hanyalah apart of aku punya hobby, tapi ia banyak bantu aku dalam meng-healingkan diri aku & mengurangkan stress hidup & stress kerja.

Selain daripada menjual, aku memang s**a bila jumpa geng2 story teller ni.

Thank you guys for being a good friend & a good comrades. Make peace not war. 😉✌🏼

Waktu set-up, suasana masih tenang & kelibat rockers pun belum kelihatan. Namun, menjelang petang, Warisan Hall mula dibanjiri geng-geng denim, seluar ketat, dan rambut panjang ketak. Barulah terasa kehangatannya.

Terus teringat gaya gitaris Slayer.

Terus aku terkejut. Tak sangka sejauh itu perjalanan dia. Good for him, well deserved. Proud of you, bro.

Back in the late ’90s, alternative music was one of the biggest influences on the Malaysian local music scene. There were many active local bands whose sound was inspired by acts such as Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum, Bush, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and the list goes on.

One of those alternative bands was even nominated for Best English Album at the 2002 AIM Awards. The band became well known for their track “Numb.” After winning the AIM Award for Best English Album, they suddenly disappeared from the local music scene.

Four years later, they made a comeback with a brand-new single titled “Heroes.”
Please enjoy this live performance by John’s Mistress at the 2009 J-Rock No Tamashii Concert, and hopefully it brings back plenty of good memories. 😉

Enjoy.
