Today, we celebrate Lieutenant Colonel Musa Umar , popularly known as "Dagger," as he completes 35 years of dedicated service in the Nigerian Army.

Lt Col Musa Umar began his military career as an Other Rank (soldier) before earning a commission as an officer through hard work, discipline, and dedication. His journey is an inspiration to many, proving that commitment and professionalism are always rewarded.

To thousands of soldiers who passed through the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, the name "Dagger" is unforgettable. As an instructor, he was known for his strict discipline and tough training, helping to shape many of the professional soldiers serving in the Nigerian Army today.

As he retires after 35 years of honourable service, we thank him for his sacrifices, leadership, and invaluable contributions to the Nigerian Army and our great nation, Nigeria.

Congratulations, Sir. We wish you good health, peace, and a fulfilling retirement.

NIGERIAN ARMY COMBAT UNIFORMS THROUGH THE YEARS

The Nigerian Army's combat uniform has changed over the years as the Army modernized and adapted to different operational environments. Here is a brief history:

1. Olive Green Combat Uniform (1960s–1980s)After independence, Nigerian soldiers mainly wore plain olive green combat uniforms. This was the standard field uniform for many years, including during the Nigerian Civil War.

2. M81 Woodland Camouflage (1984–2016)In the 1980s, the Nigerian Army adopted the M81 Woodland camouflage, which remained the standard combat uniform for more than three decades. It is the camouflage many Nigerians still remember seeing on soldiers.

3. M14 Camouflage (2014–Present)The current standard combat uniform of the Nigerian Army is the M14 camouflage, introduced to give the Armed Forces a unique Nigerian identity and improve operational effectiveness.

The M14 comes in two official versions:

M14 Woodland – Used in forest and green environments.

M14 Arid – Used in dry and semi-arid environments, especially in northern Nigeria.

Among soldiers, the M14 Woodland is popularly known by the nickname "Etisalat." This is a barracks nickname and not its official military name.

Military uniforms are more than just clothing. They represent the history, identity, and development of the Nigerian Army.
