Reducing early mortality in your farm is not luck—it’s discipline, consistency, and attention to detail.
Many farmers lose birds in the first 7–14 days, not because farming is hard, but because small mistakes were ignored. Early mortality is a message—it tells you something is wrong with your brooding, hygiene, or management.
The first key is proper brooding. Your chicks are like newborn babies—they cannot regulate their body temperature. If your pen is too cold, they pile up and suffocate. Too hot, they spread out, pant, and get weak. Maintain the right warmth, observe their behavior, and adjust accordingly. Let the chicks “tell you” if they are comfortable.
Next is clean water and early feeding. The first water your chicks drink should contain coconut water or anti stress medication to boost energy after stress from transportation. Don’t delay feeding—early access to quality feed helps them gain strength and fight infections.
Hygiene is non-negotiable. Dirty pens, wet litter, and unwashed drinkers are silent killers. Bacteria and parasites thrive in poor conditions. Disinfect your pen before stocking, keep litter dry, and wash drinkers daily. Prevention is always cheaper than treatment.
Another major factor is quality chicks. No matter how good your management is, weak or poorly hatched chicks will struggle to survive. Always buy from trusted hatcheries and inspect chicks on arrival—active, bright-eyed, and evenly sized chicks give you a better start.
Avoid overcrowding. When birds are too many in a small space, stress increases, oxygen reduces, and diseases spread faster. Give your birds enough space to move, eat, and grow comfortably.
Also, reduce stress at all costs. Sudden changes in temperature, rough handling, loud noise, or poor ventilation can weaken chicks quickly. Calm environment = healthy birds.
Finally, observe your birds daily. A good farmer doesn’t wait for mortality before acting. Check for signs like dullness, refusal to eat, or abnormal droppings. Early detection saves lives.
Early mortality is not destiny—it’s preventable. When you get the first two weeks right, you set the foundation for strong, fast-growing birds and maximum profit.
Your farm success starts from Day 1.
