Let's talk about suction machines. 🩺

You probably don't think about one until a patient actually needs it.

A suction machine helps remove secretions, blood and other fluids when keeping a patient's airway or surgical field clear is critical.

But do you know that powering on doesn't necessarily mean the machine is performing properly?

Common problems include:

🔧 Weak suction
🔧 Leaking tubes or connections
🔧 Cracked collection bottles
🔧 Blocked/contaminated filters
🔧 Damaged seals and washers
🔧 Pump or electrical faults

And because suction equipment can handle potentially infectious body fluids, proper cleaning and disinfection are essential, not optional. WHO recommends regular cleaning, disinfection/sterilization as appropriate, and routine checks for leaks, fittings, filters and suction performance.

How often should it be serviced?

It depends on the manufacturer, how heavily the equipment is used and your facility's maintenance programme. There should be regular user checks, alongside scheduled preventive maintenance by qualified personnel.

We are proud to announce that JAEY-MED Supplies and Support Services has been awarded a ₦2,600,000 business grant by the FGC Idoani Alumni Association, Lagos Chapter, following a competitive Business Symposium and pitching process. 🎉

This funding is a major step forward for us.

It will support & strengthen our capacity to serve hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and other healthcare facilities with reliable supplies.

Syringe Pump vs. Infusion Pump:

At first glance, a syringe pump and an infusion pump can look very similar. However, they are designed for different clinical purposes, and understanding the difference is essential for safe patient care.

A syringe pump delivers very small volumes of medication with exceptional precision. It is commonly used for neonatal care, insulin therapy, chemotherapy, and other medications where even a slight dosing error can have serious consequences.

An infusion pump is designed to deliver larger volumes of fluids or medications from an IV bag through tubing. It is widely used for hydration therapy, antibiotics, blood products, and continuous infusions.

One important safety consideration is free-flow. If tubing is not properly secured before opening the pump on certain models, gravity can allow fluid or medication to flow uncontrolled into the patient. Modern infusion pumps include anti-free-flow mechanisms to reduce this risk, but these safety features must be regularly inspected and maintained.

This is why routine calibration, alarm verification, preventive maintenance, and performance testing are not simply compliance requirements but critical patient safety measures.

Selecting the right device is important. Ensuring it performs as intended is just as essential.
