What a Proper Catholic Church Sound Layout Should Look Like

In my previous post, I talked about a common pattern in many churches sound that is powerful, but not always clear.

So let’s make it practical.
If a parish is planning to install or upgrade their sound system, how should they choose the right speakers?
Here are a few simple things every church should consider:

🔹 1. Clarity over size
Bigger speakers are not always better indoors. What matters most is how clearly speech can be heard especially during readings, the Gospel, and the homily.

🔹 2. Even sound coverage
The goal is not just loudness at the front. A proper system ensures that someone sitting at the back hears just as clearly as someone in front.

🔹 3. Balance between altar and choir
The altar should always be clear and present. The choir should support the liturgy not overpower it.

🔹 4. Controlled speaker types
This is where systems like:
• Column speakers (for clarity and distribution)
• 8-inch speakers (for balanced coverage)
• 12-inch speakers (used wisely for reinforcement)
come in. It’s not about using one type everywhere, but combining them properly based on the church space.

🔹 5. Placement matters more than quantity
Adding more speakers does not always solve the problem. In many cases, it actually makes it worse. Proper positioning and alignment will always outperform “more boxes.”

At the end of the day, the goal is simple:

That every word spoken at the altar, is heard clearly by everyone in the church.

So before choosing speakers, the better question to ask is: “Will this setup help the faithful hear and participate better?” Because when sound is done right, it doesn’t draw attention to itself.
It simply serves the liturgy.

With pictures from the recent Cathedraticum held in some states within Nigeria, and from visits to different parishes I’ve made over the years, I’ve been reflecting on something important.

A pattern keeps showing up. Many churches focus first on the cost of buying speakers, and then go for what looks bigger and more powerful.

So you walk in and see multiple 15-inch speakers sometimes 4, 5, even 6—installed or flown across the church. At first glance, it looks impressive.
Serious sound.
Strong presence.
But once Mass begins, the experience often says something else. The choir comes in strong, sometimes overwhelming. Then the priest speaks, and the voice feels distant.
Not necessarily quiet, just not clear.
You can hear sound, but following the words becomes work, and that’s where the real issue is, because in the Catholic Church, we are not just amplifying sound, we are transmitting the Word.

Now, 15-inch speakers are not bad. They are built for power, projection, and large open spaces, but indoors especially in reflective church environments—stacking or hanging multiple 15-inch speakers can:
• Build up low-mid frequencies
• Reduce speech intelligibility
• Create uneven sound coverage

So instead of clarity, you get volume, and in the liturgy, volume is not the goal.
Clarity is.
This is why more controlled systems like 12-inch, 8-inch, or column speakers (See photo below) often work better in churches.
They:
• Distribute sound more evenly
• Improve speech clarity
• Help maintain proper balance between the altar and the choir
and that changes everything, because when the Word is clear, the faithful don’t struggle through Mass, They participate.

So the real question is not: “Are the speakers big enough?” but this: “Is the message at the altar truly being heard, clearly?”

Sometimes, the upgrade is not more power, it’s better system design.

Last Sunday, I went to visit a friend and decided to attend Mass at his parish.
Everything looked right.
The altar was well prepared.
The choir was ready.
The church was full.
You could already tell it was going to be a beautiful celebration. Mass began. The entrance hymn came in strong, powerful, full of life, but as it went on, something felt off. The choir was loud, very loud.
You could feel the energy, but hearing the words clearly became a bit of a struggle. Then the priest began, “In the name of the Father...” and that’s when it became obvious. His microphone was too low. People started leaning forward, trying to catch every word. Some adjusted some just responded from memory.
Then came the readings. The lector stepped up, but the sound kept going in and out.
One moment you could hear clearly, the next moment, you were lost.
Then the Gospel.
That moment where everything should be clear, focused, and reverent, but instead, there were distractions. A slight feedback, an uneven mic and the message didn’t land the way it should.
The homily was deep I could tell, but not everyone was following.
Not because they didn’t want to but because they couldn’t hear properly.

I just sat there thinking, In the Catholic Church, sound is not just sound. It carries the Word. It supports the liturgy. It helps people connect.
When it’s done well, you don’t notice it.
But when it’s not, it becomes a barrier.
A barrier between the message and the people.
It made me reflect deeply.
Sometimes, what affects our experience at Mass is not the choir, not the priest, not even the congregation. Sometimes, it’s just clarity.

And maybe it’s time we start paying more attention to that.

Catholics, let’s talk.
Have you ever attended Mass where the sound made it difficult to follow the liturgy?
What exactly was the problem in your parish?
