What 5 things you should do immediately if a dog or cat bites them?
1. Wash the wound immediately.
Wash and flush the wound thoroughly with plenty of soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
2. Don’t apply harmful substances.
No pepper, leaves, acid, chemicals, or other irritating substances.
3. Get medical attention immediately.
Go to a healthcare facility as soon as possible. Don’t treat the wound at home and assume it’s fine.
4. Get assessed for rabies post-exposure treatment.
A healthcare professional will determine whether you need rabies vaccination and, when indicated, rabies immunoglobulin.
5. Don’t wait for the dog to look sick.
Even if the dog appears healthy, don’t delay getting medical advice. Tell the healthcare provider what happened and, where possible, provide information about the dog and its vaccination status.
What is ONE thing every dog owner should never forget about rabies?
Never wait for symptoms before taking rabies seriously.
Keep your dog's rabies vaccination up to date. And if a bite or other possible exposure happens, act immediately.
*With rabies, early action can save a life.*
