One of the most famous Dutch paintings in the world is temporarily on the move.

Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring has left the Mauritshuis in The Hague and can now be admired at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka. It is a rare opportunity, as the painting is only very occasionally lent out.

The reason for this special journey? The Mauritshuis is temporarily closed in August and September for maintenance work. This creates a unique opportunity to share the famous painting with audiences in Japan, where Vermeer has a particularly devoted following.

In Osaka, Girl with a Pearl Earring is part of an exhibition featuring 12 masterpieces from the Mauritshuis collection, including Vermeer’s Diana and Her Companions.

And did you know that the girl isn’t actually a portrait? Vermeer painted a tronie – an imaginary figure rather than a specific person. We still don’t know who she was. Perhaps that mystery is part of what makes her so captivating. ✨
